Both Things Can Be True

Some days I feel ten feet tall,
some days I disappear.

Courage isn’t never being terrified—
it’s showing up anyway.

I’m a thousand different versions,
and they’re all still me.

Maybe both things can be true. ♡

Behind the song

The story inside it

“Maybe strength doesn’t mean choosing. Maybe I’m all of it.”

I wrote Both Things Can Be True for the space between who people think I am and everything I feel when no one is watching. Someone can look fearless walking into a room and still cry in the driveway first. She can make everyone laugh and still replay every word she said on the drive home.

For a long time, I thought I had to choose one version of myself: confident or insecure, brave or terrified, healed or hurting. The song lets those opposites sit beside each other. Courage is not the absence of fear. Sometimes it is simply showing up while fear is still there.

The bridge is where the pressure to choose finally falls away. Strength and sensitivity do not cancel each other out; they belong to the same whole person. I do not have to apologize for being loud and quiet, glowing and searching, strong and soft. I am a thousand different versions—and they are all still me.
