But No, You Didn't Use Me

For when they kept coming back for comfort without staying for the connection that comfort was supposed to belong to.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Were they really confused, or did “confusion” just let them keep taking what felt good without having to choose me?
What you may need to hear

Someone can be confused and still be responsible for how their choices affect you. You don’t have to keep accepting uncertainty when the pattern consistently leaves one person comforted and the other hurt.

Featured lyric
“You take what soothes, avoid what stings, Then act like silence fixes things.”
From the song story

For when you stop calling it confusion and start noticing who always benefited from the uncertainty.

[Verse 1] Oh no, you didn’t use me, You just took what felt good for a while. Left me with the echoes and questions, And that classic guilty smile. You saw me start to move on, Then came back right on cue Said everything I wanted, Then vanished like you do.

[Pre-Chorus] You wanted comfort, not connection, Validation, not reflection. But sure… you didn’t use me.

[Chorus] You call it honesty, I call it convenience, You say confusion, I say experience. You take what soothes, avoid what stings, Then act like silence fixes things. Confusion says, “I’m still finding out.” Use says, “I’ll take what feels good, then peace out.” But no , of course , you didn’t use me.

[Verse 2] You came back ‘cause you missed attention, Not the person that gave it. You wanted soft when it suited you, Then silence when you couldn’t face it. You wanted relief, not meaning, A soft place, not healing. But no, you didn’t use me… right?

[Bridge] You wanted the high, not the healing, The chase, not the meaning. You lit the match, then blamed the flame Guess shame’s your favorite feeling. You take what’s soft, turn it rough, Call it peace when you’ve had enough. But baby, comfort isn’t care, And I’m not yours to repair.

You took what soothed you, Dodged what grew you, Left me holding both the truth and the bruise. And still somehow, You say you didn’t use me.

[Final Chorus / Outro] You call it honesty, I call it habit, You found comfort, then ran from having it. Confusion feels like maybe, Use feels like proof you’re empty. But no, you didn’t use me You just needed to feel chosen. I gave you peace, You left it broken.

But No, You Didn't Use Me

But No, You Didn't Use Me

“But No, You Didn’t Use Me” is about the moment I stopped arguing with myself about whether someone’s intentions were bad enough to justify how their behavior made me feel. I wrote this song with sarcasm because, for so long, I kept finding softer explanations for behavior that hurt me. Maybe he was confused. Maybe he missed me. Maybe he cared but didn’t know how to show it. Maybe he was scared. Maybe he didn’t mean to use me. Eventually, I realized intention doesn’t erase impact.

The line, “You wanted comfort, not connection, Validation, not reflection.” became the heart of this song. From where I stood, there was a pattern. He would come back when he wanted closeness, comfort, attention, reassurance, or familiarity. I would give those things freely because I cared about him. Then when connection required consistency, accountability, or something more emotionally substantial, the distance would return. That's why the title is sarcastic. “But no, you didn’t use me...” Because I spent so much time defending his possible intentions that I wasn't allowing myself to acknowledge my own experience. I kept thinking I needed to solve what was happening inside his head before I was allowed to decide what was happening wasn't okay for me. But I don't actually know exactly what was happening inside his head. And this song doesn't need me to pretend that I do. What I know is what the pattern felt like from where I stood. I felt useful when he needed something and disposable when he didn't.

There's a painful difference between someone genuinely trying to build something with you and someone repeatedly returning because your presence gives them comfort, validation, familiarity, or the feeling of being wanted. That doesn't mean every affectionate moment was calculated. It doesn't mean nothing was real. And it doesn't require me to decide that someone consciously planned to hurt me. It simply means I eventually had to stop asking whether his intentions were innocent enough and start asking whether the pattern was healthy enough for me to keep participating in.

The bridge captures what I eventually understood: “You wanted the high, not the healing, The chase, not the meaning.” I could give someone compassion. I could understand their wounds. I could even believe they cared about me in whatever capacity they were capable of. But none of that meant I had to continue being the place they returned to for comfort while refusing to build anything stable with me. And that's really what this song resolves. I don't need a confession. I don't need him to agree with the word used. I don't need to prove his motives beyond a reasonable doubt inside my own head. I know how the pattern left me feeling. And that is enough information for me to stop participating in it.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
