The story behind
Hungry to Be Held
“Hungry To Be Held” is about the place where my fear of losing connection and my relationship with boundaries started getting tangled together. For a long time, I thought giving was easier than risking rejection. Sometimes it felt easier to accommodate someone, stay quiet, or go along with something than to face the possibility that saying what I really needed might make them pull away. That's where the title came from.
When you're starving for connection, crumbs can feel enormous. And sometimes the fear of losing those crumbs can make you abandon parts of yourself just to keep someone close. The line,
“It’s easier to give than to risk rejection, Easier to fold than demand protection.” became the heart of this song. Because there have been moments when my body and my attachment weren't asking for the same thing. One part of me could want closeness, affection, reassurance, or simply not to be abandoned, while another part of me was uncomfortable and wanted a boundary.
For a long time, I judged myself for those contradictions.
The bridge asks a harder question about how past trauma may have shaped my relationship with saying no. I don't have to reduce every response I've ever had to one explanation. But I do know that bodies can learn survival responses, and sometimes mine has responded to fear by freezing, appeasing, becoming quiet, or trying to preserve connection. That doesn't mean my boundaries disappeared.
It means I'm learning to hear them sooner and trust them more.
The healing in this song is realizing that connection purchased through self-abandonment isn't the connection I'm actually starving for. I want closeness where I can speak. I want affection that doesn't require me to override myself. I want relationships where saying no doesn't threaten belonging. I want to know that someone can be disappointed and still stay kind. And most importantly, I want to stop treating another person's willingness to remain close to me as more important than my willingness to remain close to myself.
I don't want love at any cost anymore. I want the kind of connection where I don't have to lose pieces of myself just to keep it.
“It’s easier to give than to risk rejection,
Easier to fold than demand protection” ♡
Wanting connection and having boundaries can exist at the same time. Fear of rejection, appeasing, freezing, or difficulty speaking up can complicate how you respond in a moment. Your needs and boundaries still matter, even when expressing them feels difficult.♡
