Changed Me

For when the relationship ended, but your mind and body were still carrying the ways it taught you to question yourself and brace for danger.

Emotional question
Why am I still reacting to something that isn’t happening anymore?
What you may need to hear

Sometimes the impact of a harmful relationship lasts beyond the relationship itself. You can know you're somewhere different now while still noticing old fear, doubt, or protective responses showing up. Healing can include slowly rebuilding trust in yourself and in the present.

Verse 1 You didn’t hit me, you just bent the truth Like glass under pressure till it shattered my proof You said “love” softly, but it cut like a knife Turning my own heartbeat against my life You smiled while you moved every boundary line Till I questioned my memory, my gut, my mind And the girl I was before your games Started disappearing inside your frame

Pre-Chorus Now I’m learning things I wish I never knew How someone can break you Without leaving a bruise

Chorus You didn’t just break my heart You changed me Rewired every signal in my brain Now my body shakes when it feels something safe Like love is just another kind of pain You didn’t just steal my trust You rearranged me Turned my nervous system into war Now my mind runs circles around memories I never questioned before You didn’t just hurt me You changed me

Verse 2 I used to sleep through every night Now my body wakes up ready to fight Like danger’s hiding in every room Even when there’s nothing there but you I used to laugh without thinking twice Now every joy comes with a price ’Cause somewhere deep in my chest it stays The echo of all your twisted ways

Pre-Chorus And they say “just move on” Like it’s easy to do But they don’t understand What you turned me into

Chorus You didn’t just break my heart You changed me Turned my instincts into doubt and fear Now my body holds the weight of words You whispered in my ear You didn’t just steal my love You rearranged me Turned my peace into a war inside Now I’m healing things I never broke Just to feel alive You didn’t just hurt me You changed me

Bridge They don’t see the sickness in the soul Or the way trauma lives inside the bones How the body keeps the score of lies Long after someone says goodbye How love became a loaded gun And silence louder than a scream How the mirror shows a different girl Than the one I used to be You didn’t just leave scars in my heart You left them in my chemistry

Final Chorus You didn’t just break my heart You changed me Shifted every current in my veins Now I’m learning how to trust again Without drowning in the pain You didn’t just take my love You rearranged me But you didn’t take the strongest part ’Cause even after all your damage I’m still here Learning how to find my heart

Changed Me

For when the relationship ended, but your mind and body were still carrying the ways it taught you to question yourself and brace for danger.

Changed Me

“Changed Me” is about the invisible aftermath of emotional abuse. Some wounds don't leave bruises. They change the way you trust yourself, the way you experience closeness, and the way your body responds to something that once felt safe.

I wrote this song because people often think healing begins and ends when the relationship does. But sometimes leaving is only the beginning of understanding what you're still carrying. Long after the lies stop, your body can still remember. You can jump at small things. Replay conversations. Question memories you once felt certain about. Struggle to trust your instincts. You can meet people who have done nothing to hurt you and still find yourself waiting for the moment safety disappears.

The line, “You didn’t just break my heart, You changed me.” became the heart of this song because the deepest damage wasn't simply losing someone I loved. It was watching my relationship with myself change. My confidence became self-doubt. My peace became hypervigilance. My intuition became something I questioned instead of trusted. There were times when I knew something felt wrong, but after enough minimizing, boundary-pushing, and questioning of what I knew, I started looking at myself for the problem. Am I overreacting? Am I too sensitive? Did it really happen the way I remember it? Can I trust what my body is telling me? And eventually those questions can follow you even after the person doesn't.

That's why “just move on” has never felt like enough language for certain kinds of hurt. You can leave someone before your body stops expecting them. You can understand what happened before you completely trust yourself again. You can know intellectually that you're safe before safety actually feels safe.

The line that means the most to me now is: “Now I’m healing things I never broke.” There's something deeply unfair about having to repair damage you didn't create. But healing it doesn't mean taking responsibility for causing it. I'm rebuilding trust in my instincts because they're mine. I'm learning what safety feels like because I deserve to experience it. I'm learning that being affected by what happened doesn't mean what happened gets to become my identity. Because trauma can change us. But healing changes us too.

The ending of this song isn't about staying broken. It's about realizing that someone else may have changed parts of me, but they don't get to decide what those changes become. I'm learning to trust again. I'm learning to listen to myself again. I'm learning that safe doesn't have to mean something bad just hasn't happened yet. I'm learning that what someone did to me and who I am are not the same story. So yes, what happened changed me. But it didn't get the final word. I do.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
