Dark Room

For when their silence left you searching in the dark for answers, until you started shrinking your own needs just to keep the connection.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why did their emotional distance make me question myself instead of questioning what I wasn’t receiving?
What you may need to hear

When someone gives very little emotional information, it can be easy to fill in the blanks yourself. You may analyze your needs, tone, behavior, or worth instead of noticing how much uncertainty you're being asked to tolerate. Wanting clarity and emotional presence doesn't make you too much.

Featured lyric
“You turned love into a dark room Where I had to feel around to find the truth”
From the song story

For when you spent so long searching their silence for answers that you started treating your own needs like the problem.

You never told me what you liked about me Just brushed my leg and called it deep You never asked me to be your girlfriend But acted mad when I found my feet

I mistook your quiet for intention Thought your calm meant I could breathe But it was just a lack of presence And I was gasping underneath

[Pre-Chorus] I tried to shrink, tried to soften the sound Of all my needs that you shut down I folded so small, you could ignore The girl who wanted something more

[Chorus] You turned love into a dark room Where I had to feel around to find the truth You never yelled, but you cut me still With every silence you refused to fill And I kept asking, “Is it me?” When it was you who couldn’t be seen I was never too much, you were just too removed You turned love into a dark room

[Verse 2] You made jokes when I shared my pain Smiled while I unraveled again I couldn’t cry without being the punchline Couldn’t speak without twisting the frame

You’d cross my boundaries just to test me Then say I’m sensitive, too intense But breaking someone with a gentle hand Doesn’t make the damage make more sense

[Pre-Chorus] You called it peace, but it was delay Of all the truths you’d never say And I went silent to survive But silence isn’t love, it’s just disguise

[Chorus] You turned love into a dark room Where I had to feel around to find the truth You never yelled, but you cut me still With every silence you refused to fill And I kept asking, “Is it me?” When it was you who couldn’t be seen I was never too much, you were just too removed You turned love into a dark room

[Bridge] I fawned so you’d stay Gave up parts of me each day Told myself, “At least he’s kind” But being quiet doesn’t make you right

You never told me what I meant to you Just kept me spinning, guessing what was true And now I know Safe shouldn't feel like walking on glass just to be held close

[Final Chorus You turned love into a dark room But I’m done fumbling just to feel you I need words, I need light I need truth that doesn’t hide at night So take your silence, take your shame I'm not the girl who stays in blame I was never too much, you were just too removed You turned love into a dark room

[Outro And I deserve to be seen in full color Not dimmed down to fit your comfort

Dark Room

For when their silence left you searching in the dark for answers, until you started shrinking your own needs just to keep the connection.

Dark Room

“Dark Room” is about the kind of relationship where nothing is always obviously wrong, but nothing ever feels fully safe either. There wasn’t constant yelling or a dramatic fight I could point to every day. Instead, there was silence. Avoidance. Jokes that minimized my pain. Affection without emotional intimacy. Being physically close to someone while still feeling like I was constantly searching for them emotionally. And when you're given very little clarity, you start filling in the blanks yourself. I analyzed tone. Distance. Affection. Silence. What was said and everything that wasn't. Eventually, instead of asking, “Why am I receiving so little clarity?” I started asking: “What’s wrong with me?” Maybe I needed too much. Maybe I was too emotional. Maybe I talked too much. Maybe if I became quieter, softer, easier, or less complicated, the relationship would finally feel safe. That’s where I slowly started losing myself.

The line, “You turned love into a dark room, Where I had to feel around to find the truth.” became the heart of this song because that’s exactly what it felt like. I was constantly reaching for answers that I thought should have been freely given, trying to figure out where I stood and what he felt while honesty always seemed just out of reach. For a long time, I also mistook emotional distance for peace. I thought because someone wasn't yelling, everything must be okay. I had learned to recognize obvious chaos as danger, so quiet could initially feel safe.

But healing taught me that the absence of yelling isn't automatically the presence of emotional safety. Someone doesn't have to be loud to leave you feeling unseen. Safety is being able to ask questions without being made to feel difficult. It's having your pain taken seriously instead of turned into a joke. It's having boundaries respected. It's receiving honest answers. It's knowing where you stand without having to become a detective inside your own relationship. Sometimes silence is peaceful. And sometimes silence is where accountability hides.

The line, “I tried to shrink, tried to soften the sound Of all my needs that you shut down.” captures another part of this song that matters to me. I spent so much time trying to make my needs easier for someone else to receive that I stopped asking whether I was receiving what I needed at all. I don't want love like that anymore. I don't want to guess how someone feels. I don't want to shrink myself to avoid conflict. I don't want reassurance to feel like something I have to earn. Real love shouldn't leave me fumbling around in the dark. It brings things into the light.

And that's what the ending means to me. I want words. I want honesty. I want emotional presence. I want to be fully seen, not merely tolerated, hidden, or loved only in the places where someone else feels comfortable. I don't want to dim myself to fit inside someone else's capacity for closeness. I deserve to be loved in full color.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
