Half Of Me Still Stays

For when your head has accepted the ending, but your attachment is still holding onto the person your heart learned to call home.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
How can I know this isn’t right for me and still want them the second I see them again?
What you may need to hear

Knowing a relationship isn’t right for you doesn’t make attachment disappear overnight. You can remember the hurt and still miss their touch, familiarity, or presence. Conflicting feelings don’t mean you’re confused about what you deserve. They can simply mean different parts of you are letting go at different speeds.

Featured lyric
“My head says “go,” my heart won’t leave.”
From the song story

For when you realize the part of you that still loves them doesn’t have to be silenced, but it also doesn’t have to decide whether you stay.

I see you, and the storm goes quiet, All my reasons fade in your smile. Every word I swore I’d say, Gets lost when you look my way. I forget the nights I cried, The empty space you left behind. My heart forgets the pain it knows, And runs back like it’s got no control.

[Pre-Chorus] I hate that I still crave your touch, When you’ve never really given enough. I’m split between what’s real and right, And what just feels good tonight.

[Chorus] Half of me still stays, half of me’s running. Half of me’s numb, half of me’s humming Your name like a ghost in my veins. Half of me knows, half of me prays You’ll change but you won’t — I know it deep down, Still I circle back around. You’re the calm and the hurricane, And I keep dancing in the rain.

[Verse 2] You say “hey,” and I forget why I cried, Your smile erases every goodbye. Swore I’d quit, but I breathe you in, You hold me soft, then turn to wind. All the hurt dissolves in your stare, But when you’re gone, the ache’s still there. I pull away, but I always grieve — My head says “go,” my heart won’t leave.

[Pre-Chorus] I hate that peace feels just like pain, You’re the prayer I shouldn’t say again. You’re the comfort and the cost, And I can’t tell which side I’ve lost.

[Chorus] Half of me still stays, half of me’s leaving, Half of me breaks, half keeps believing. You’re the silence and the sound. Half of me fights, half of me drowns. You’re the poison and the cure, And I don’t know who I am anymore.

[Bridge] I keep waiting for you to meet me halfway, But your love’s a ghost I chase. And every time I try to walk away, You show up with that face, And half of me forgives you again, Even when I know how this ends.

[Final Chorus] Half of me stays, half of me’s running, Half of me’s lost, half keeps loving. You’re my peace and my pain, And I can’t tear the two apart again. If love is war, I’m losing slow — ‘Cause half of me can’t let you go.

[Outro] Half of me hopes you’ll fight, Half of me knows you won’t. But somehow both sides still love you tonight.

Half Of Me Still Stays

I wrote “Half of Me Still Stays” about feeling like two versions of me existed at the same time. One version could see everything clearly. She remembered the hurt, recognized the pattern, understood why the relationship wasn't working, and knew she needed to leave. But then I would see him again. Suddenly, all of that certainty became harder to hold. The person who had hurt me was also the person whose smile felt familiar, whose touch I missed, and whose presence could temporarily quiet everything I had been trying to process.

That's where the line, “My head says ‘go’ My heart won’t leave.” became the heart of this song. When he was gone, I could remember everything clearly. When he was in front of me, my body remembered something different. The familiarity. The affection. The laughter. The moments that had felt good. The hope that maybe this time something would be different. And then he would leave again, and the clarity would come rushing back. For a long time, I thought that contradiction meant I didn't really know what I wanted. How can I know something isn't right for me and still want it? How can I remember how much something hurt and still feel relief when the person comes back? How can part of me want to leave while another part is terrified to let go?

Eventually, I started realizing that my head and my attachment weren't healing at the same speed. Part of me had accepted the truth. Another part was still attached to the familiarity, the hope, the physical closeness, and the version of us I wished could exist. Both parts were real. And I didn't have to shame either one. That's probably the biggest lesson inside this song. Healing doesn't require me to pretend I stopped loving someone the exact moment I realized the relationship wasn't healthy for me. I can miss someone and still leave. I can feel comfort when I see them and still remember what happens when they're gone. I can acknowledge the part of me that wants to run back without handing that part the keys. The goal isn't to force half of me to disappear. It's learning that the part of me that still loves someone doesn't automatically get to decide what all of me deserves.

That's what “Half of Me Still Stays” ultimately means to me. One part can grieve. One part can miss him. One part can still wish the story had ended differently. And another part can keep walking anyway. I can honor the part that still stays without actually staying.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
