Haunted By What You Missed

For when the relationship didn’t collapse all at once, but through all the small moments they chose distance instead of repair.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Could I have loved them enough to make them feel safe if they had actually let me?
What you may need to hear

You can offer someone patience, understanding, and emotional safety, but you cannot make them participate in closeness or repair. A relationship requires two people willing to communicate and respond to each other. Their decision to withdraw isn’t proof that you failed to love them well enough.

Featured lyric

Verse 1 I saw the weight you never said out loud, Carried fears that always pulled you down. I held the cracks, tried to make them whole, Stayed through the fire, through the cold.

Pre-Chorus You acted like it was hard to do, But I was breaking myself just to show you.

Chorus You let it get like this, Now you’re haunted by what you missed. I would’ve loved you there, Carried the weight you couldn’t bear. Safe , safe to feel, But you pushed away the only thing real. Now you’ll haunt yourself with what you missed, Yeah, you let it get like this.

Verse 2 I knew the battles you could never name, The pride, the silence, the hidden shame. I never ran, I never walked away, But you still made love a game.

Bridge Safe to feel… (but you turned away) Real to heal… (but you made me fade) You’ll tell yourself you tried, But I was the safest place to hide.

Final Chorus You let it get like this, Forever haunted by what you missed. I would’ve loved you there, Carried the weight you couldn’t bear. Safe , safe to feel, But you pushed away the only thing real. Now you’ll haunt yourself with what you missed, Yeah, you let it get like this.

Haunted By What You Missed

For when the relationship didn’t collapse all at once, but through all the small moments they chose distance instead of repair.

Haunted By What You Missed

“Haunted By What You Missed” is about realizing that some relationships don't end because love wasn't there. They end because one person keeps allowing fear, pride, avoidance, and silence to slowly destroy something the other person is still trying to hold together.

I wrote this song from the perspective of finally understanding how much I had been carrying. I saw the things he struggled to say out loud. I understood the fear underneath the distance. I could see the parts of him that were hurting, and instead of running from them, I tried to make those parts feel safe. I was willing to stay through the uncomfortable parts. But eventually, I realized I was breaking myself trying to prove to someone else that love was safe.

The line, “You let it get like this,” became the heart of the song because it captures something I had a hard time accepting: not everything that falls apart was inevitable. Sometimes relationships deteriorate through hundreds of smaller choices. The conversation someone avoids. The vulnerability they push away. The reassurance they don't give. The pride they protect. The distance they keep creating instead of repairing. Eventually, all of those little choices become an ending.

That's also why the line, “You acted like it was hard to do, but I was breaking myself just to show you,” matters so much to me. There was something painful about hearing the relationship described as though loving me or staying connected had simply become too difficult while knowing how hard I had been working to hold everything together. I wasn't asking him to have everything figured out. I wasn't asking him to never feel afraid or overwhelmed. I was asking him to participate. To communicate. To come back after disconnection. To let himself be known instead of constantly protecting himself from vulnerability. And eventually, I had to accept that I couldn't create safety for someone who continually chose distance from it.

That's where the title comes in. “Haunted By What You Missed” isn't really about hoping he spends the rest of his life regretting me. It's not revenge. It's the thought that maybe, with enough time, distance, or growth, he may someday understand what was actually being offered to him. Maybe he'll understand that I wasn't asking him to be perfect. I was asking him to show up. Maybe he'll recognize that someone was willing to know the difficult parts of him without requiring him to hide them. But whether he ever understands that isn't mine to carry anymore. I loved him where he was. But I couldn't keep destroying myself trying to convince him it was safe to love me back. He didn't have to let the relationship become what it became. But he made choices, I made choices, and eventually those choices created an ending. My responsibility now isn't to make sure he understands what he lost. It's to stop carrying the consequences of choices that weren't mine to make.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
