I Didn't Even Like You

For when you realize you weren’t staying because the relationship made you happy, you were staying because leaving the pattern felt harder than living inside it.

Emotional question
If I wasn’t even happy with them, why was it still so hard to leave?
What you may need to hear

Difficulty leaving doesn’t automatically mean a relationship was right for you. Sometimes attachment can remain strong even when happiness, compatibility, or emotional safety are missing. Understanding what kept you attached can help you separate missing the person from struggling to leave the pattern.

I didn’t even like you, I just couldn’t leave You felt like chaos, and I called it peace You weren’t kind, you weren’t true But leaving felt like breaking too You didn’t hold me with care Didn’t ask, didn’t dare To really see me, really stay But I twisted myself to make you stay

[Pre-Chorus] I wasn’t loved, I was addicted To the chase, to the hope, to the way you were distant You didn’t give, but I gave enough To keep convincing myself this was love

[Chorus] You never chose me, never tried But leaving you still made me cry How do I grieve what never felt right? I was surviving, not alive It wasn’t love, it was a wound A bond that felt like coming home too soon I didn’t even like you But I couldn’t leave you ‘Cause walking away felt like losing me too

[Verse 2] You didn’t nurture, didn’t care But I still waited, still sat there Hoping silence might turn to sound But empty echoes were all I found

I didn’t dream of you at night I dreamed of being loved right But pain was familiar, and so was the wait So I stayed, called the pattern fate

[Pre-Chorus] I was fawning, not choosing Telling myself that I was losing Something sacred, something true When the truth is, I never really had you

Chorus You never chose me, never tried But leaving you still made me cry How do I grieve what never felt right? I was surviving, not alive It wasn’t love, it was a wound A bond that felt like coming home too soon I didn’t even like you But I couldn’t leave you ‘Cause walking away felt like losing me too

This isn’t what I wanted Just what I was conditioned to keep To stay in rooms where I feel small And call the ache “deep”

It wasn’t magic, it was fear Of what I’d lose if I disappeared But I’m not losing love, I’m losing lack And finally learning not to crawl back

Final Chorus You never chose me, never tried But I mistook neglect for time I thought I loved you, but that’s not true I was just scared of losing who I was to you It wasn’t love, it was a bruise That bled into the girl I outgrew I didn’t even like you And now I can leave you Because I finally remembered how to choose me too

I Didn't Even Like You

For when you realize you weren’t staying because the relationship made you happy, you were staying because leaving the pattern felt harder than living inside it.

I Didn't Even Like You

"I Didn't Even Like You" is about one of the hardest realizations I've ever had: I wasn't grieving the person. I was grieving the attachment. For a long time, I thought I couldn't leave because I loved him so much. But healing forced me to ask a painful question: If I was honest with myself… did I even like the relationship I was in? The answer surprised me. I didn't feel safe. I didn't feel chosen. I didn't feel cared for. I wasn't laughing, growing, or becoming more of myself. I was surviving.

I wrote this song because I realized I wasn't staying for love, I was staying because leaving felt unbearable. The relationship had become familiar, and my nervous system confused familiarity with safety. I wasn't addicted to him. I was attached to the hope that one day he'd become the person I kept waiting for.

The line, "I didn't even like you, but I couldn't leave you," became the heart of this song. Because trauma bonds don't make sense until you've healed enough to see them. Sometimes you aren't grieving what you had. You're grieving what you desperately wanted it to become. The bridge is where everything changes. When I sing, "I'm not losing love, I'm losing lack," it's the moment I realized walking away wasn't losing the best thing that ever happened to me. It was letting go of the constant hunger for something I was never receiving.

This song isn't about being embarrassed that I stayed. It's about understanding why I did. And it's about finally recognizing that choosing myself wasn't losing someone I loved. It was finding the version of me I had abandoned trying to earn love that was never freely given. In the end, I didn't just leave the relationship. I left the belief that I had to settle for surviving when I deserved to feel fully loved.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
