A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
When did loving them turn into losing myself just to keep the relationship alive?
What you may need to hear

Loving someone doesn’t make you responsible for healing them. You can understand their wounds, care deeply, and still recognize when staying is costing you too much of yourself. Choosing to protect your own well-being doesn’t erase the love you gave.

Verse 1] You watched me break like glass in your hands Unbothered by the bleeding, you just let it stand I screamed for change, you stayed the same While I twisted myself just to carry your pain

[Pre-Chorus] I was fighting for something That was quietly killing me And the worst part is You knew, and let it be

[Chorus] I lost me loving you Tried to hold together what was never whole I mistook chaos for truth Thought if I gave enough, you'd grow a soul But broken can't be built by bleeding through I lost me... loving you

[Verse 2] I thought if I stayed, you'd find your way But I was the anchor to your shame You never cared enough to rise You just let me drown while you fed me lies

[Pre-Chorus 2] I saw your wounds, and called them mine Tried to fix what wasn't on the line You were fine letting me fall As long as you didn't have to feel at all

[Chorus] I lost me loving you Tried to rescue what was built to sink You called it love, but that's not true Love doesn't watch you shatter and not blink Now I know that what you do Is not my fault, and never was my truth But still -I lost me loving you

[Bridge] And what you tolerate becomes your cage I learned the hard way through your rage

But silence is still a choice too And you chose it... While I chose you

[Final Chorus] I found me leaving you That girl who begged has closed the door I still ache, but I see through - You're not a man, just a boy needing more You couldn't handle love that's true So I stopped choosing pain over proof And finally, I found me... By losing you

I Lost Me Loving You

“I Lost Me Loving You” is about the moment I realized that somewhere in trying to save someone else, I had stopped protecting myself. For a long time, I believed loving someone meant understanding their wounds, being patient with their struggles, and staying when things became difficult. So when I saw someone hurting, my instinct was to love harder. I carried pain that wasn’t mine. I excused things that were hurting me. I kept believing that if I gave enough, understood enough, stayed patient enough, or loved someone through enough of their wounds, eventually something would change.

But slowly, loving him became less about loving another person and more about abandoning myself to keep the relationship alive. That’s where the line, “I lost me loving you.” came from. I was so focused on whether he would change, heal, choose me, or become capable of giving the relationship what it needed that I stopped asking what all of that waiting was doing to me. I saw his wounds and started carrying them like they belonged to me. I translated behavior that hurt me into pain I could understand. I thought understanding someone deeply meant I should be able to love them through almost anything.

But eventually I learned that understanding where someone’s behavior comes from doesn’t mean I have to keep accepting its impact. I wasn't responsible for healing him. I couldn't love someone into becoming ready. I couldn't love someone into accountability. I couldn't love someone into emotional availability. And I couldn't keep bleeding pieces of myself into someone else's wounds and call that devotion. That was one of the hardest things for me to accept because leaving could initially feel like giving up on someone I loved. But eventually I realized I had already been giving up on someone. Me.

That's why the final chorus changes the entire meaning of the song: “I found me leaving you.” Leaving wasn't only losing someone I loved. It was getting myself back. My voice. My boundaries. My needs. My ability to recognize when compassion had crossed into self-abandonment. I can still acknowledge someone's wounds without making them mine to heal. I can have empathy without sacrificing myself to prove it. And I can love someone while accepting that love alone cannot build a healthy relationship for two people. That's ultimately what this song means to me. Love should never require so much of you that eventually you can't recognize the person giving it. I lost me loving you. And I found me when I finally stopped choosing the relationship over myself.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
