I See You Still

For when you can see the fear underneath their silence while trying to explain the fear their silence creates in you.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
How do I give someone space without feeling like every step away means they’re leaving me?
What you may need to hear

Someone can need space without wanting to leave you, and you can respect that space while still needing reassurance that the connection is intact. Healthy space doesn’t have to mean disappearing. It can sound like, “I need some time, but I’m still here, and we’ll come back to this.” Both people’s needs can matter at the same time.

Featured lyric

For when you’re trying to respect someone’s need for distance while teaching your own body that space doesn’t always mean abandonment.

I know silence is your shelter, And talking feels like the storm. You think pulling back keeps you safe, But it's me that keeps you warm I know it's not about not caring, It's that caring starts the ache. You build calm from quiet places, While I chase what you can't face. [Pre-Chorus I'm not asking you to fix it, Just to stay when it's unclear. You don't have to have the answers, Just let me know you're here. [Chorus] I see you still, even when you run, Even when you hide behind the calm. I know your quiet's just a wall of fear, So you don't have to disappear. You don't fail me when you're scared, You fail me when you don't share. If we could meet halfway tonight, Maybe silence wouldn't have to fight. [Verse 2] You're not wrong for needing space, I just need to know there's a way back. If I reach and you step away, My body feels like it's under attack. I don't need every thought inside, Just a little sign of life. You don't have to prove you care, Just don't make me guess if you're still there. [Bridge]

It's not blame, it's just truth - Both our fears got in the room. You hide yours, I bleed mine. We both call it peace, this time. [Final Chorus / Outro] I see you still, under all the noise, The fear, the silence, the old boy's voice. You don't have to earn your worth with fight - Just stay, and say, "I'm here tonight."

I See You Still

“I See You Still” is about understanding why someone pulls away without pretending their distance doesn't affect me. For a long time, when someone I loved became quiet or distant, my instinct was to move closer. I wanted reassurance. I wanted answers. I wanted some indication that the connection was still there. His instinct often seemed to be the opposite. When emotions became uncomfortable, silence seemed safer. Distance created room to breathe. Pulling away seemed to restore a sense of control. And because I could understand that, I tried to make room for it.

That's where the opening came from: “I know silence is your shelter, and talking feels like the storm.” I didn't always interpret his silence as proof that he didn't care. Sometimes I wondered if caring itself was what made things feel overwhelming. But eventually I learned that understanding why someone needs distance doesn't erase what that distance does to the person standing on the other side of it.

That's why the line, “You're not wrong for needing space, I just need to know there's a way back,” became the heart of this song. I wasn't asking for access to every thought in his head. I wasn't asking him to immediately know the perfect thing to say. And I wasn't asking him to never need time alone. I needed a bridge. Something as simple as, “I'm overwhelmed, but I'm still here.” “I need some time, but we're okay.” “I can't talk about this right now, but I'll come back.”

Because without that bridge, what felt like space to him could feel like abandonment to me. And that's where my side of the pattern matters too. When I felt someone pulling away, my body could react before my mind had time to understand what was happening. The more distance I felt, the more urgently I wanted connection. The more urgently I reached, the more overwhelmed the other person could become.

That's why the bridge says: “Both our fears got in the room.” That line matters because this song isn't about deciding whose fear was more valid. We were both trying to feel safe. We were just moving in opposite directions to find it. But understanding that doesn't mean the pattern had to continue. Space and reassurance aren't opposites. Someone can need distance and still communicate. Someone can need connection and still learn not to chase. Meeting halfway doesn't mean either person abandons what they need. It means finding a way for both people to remain emotionally connected even when they regulate differently.

That's what “I See You Still” means to me. I could see the fear underneath his silence. I could understand the part of him that wanted to retreat. But healing also meant learning to see myself with the same compassion. I can understand why you need space without pretending I don't need a way back.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
