If Silence Could Speak

For when you realized doing nothing was still communicating something, and their silence kept saying what their words wouldn’t.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
If they cared so deeply, why did their empathy disappear whenever caring required them to do something uncomfortable?
What you may need to hear

Someone can care about you and still struggle to show that care in the ways a relationship requires. Empathy isn’t only an internal feeling. It also shows up through communication, accountability, and repair. Wanting someone to respond instead of leaving you alone in uncertainty isn’t asking for too much.

Featured lyric
“Empathy isn’t what you feel It’s what you do And doing nothing tells the truth.”
From the song story

For when someone said they cared deeply, but every time caring required discomfort, their silence left you carrying the relationship alone.

[Verse 1] You don’t have to lie , you just have to show up. But you disappear every time it gets close to enough. I was starving for answers, you were guarding your peace, And I learned the hard way what silence means.

[Bridge A ] You swear you feel so much, But only when it doesn’t hurt too much.

[Verse 2] You preach compassion, but you choose control; Every time it costs your comfort, you let go. You think your quiet keeps the peace, While I’m the one that can’t find sleep. You call it peace, I call it distance, And I’m left breaking in the silence.

[Bridge B ] You disappear to stay composed, While I’m the one that overdosed On waiting for a simple sign That I still matter in your mind.

[Pre-Chorus] It’s not anger , it’s the ache of being unseen, Of waiting for words that never leave your screen. You say you feel so deeply, but defense drowns empathy; Your calm is the storm that keeps breaking me.

[Chorus] If silence could speak, it would sound like good-bye. If distance could talk, it would ask you why. You keep your conscience clean while I fall apart, And I’m left carrying both our hearts.

[Verse 3] You say you don’t wanna hurt me, But you do it by doing nothing. I kept mistaking absence for honesty, When it was just avoidance wearing empathy. One message, one line , how hard could it be? Your peace keeps costing pieces of me.

[Bridge C] I know it stings us both, but only one of us bleeds. Your wall protects you , it buries me. Empathy isn’t what you feel, it’s what you do; And doing nothing tells the truth.

[Final Chorus / Outro] If silence could speak, it would call your name, Tell you that caring shouldn’t feel like shame. You say you’re gentle, you say you’re kind, Then vanish and call it peace of mind. You hide from pain, I drown in proof Your silence screams the loudest truth. You said nothing to spare yourself, And left me talking to no one else. If silence could speak, it would whisper your name, Tell you that peace and love aren’t the same.

If Silence Could Speak

For when you realized doing nothing was still communicating something, and their silence kept saying what their words wouldn’t.

If Silence Could Speak

“If Silence Could Speak” is about realizing that sometimes silence communicates just as much as words do. I wasn't asking for perfect answers. I wasn't asking someone to never become overwhelmed, never need space, or always know exactly what to say. Sometimes I would've been completely okay hearing: “I don't know.” “I'm scared.” “I need some time.” What hurt was being left with nothing.

The line, “If silence could speak It would sound like goodbye.” came from what repeated withdrawal started to feel like. Every time something became emotionally uncomfortable, I felt like I was left alone with the problem while the other person protected their own peace. And eventually I started understanding that the conflict itself wasn't always what hurt me most. It was the absence of repair afterward. I could tolerate an imperfect conversation. What became harder to tolerate was wondering whether the conversation would ever happen at all. For a long time, I also confused someone feeling deeply with someone being capable of showing up emotionally.

That's where the line, “Empathy isn’t what you feel It’s what you do.” became the heart of this song. Someone can genuinely care. Someone can have good intentions. Someone can hate knowing that they've hurt you. But relationships eventually require those internal feelings to become something another person can actually experience. Communication. Accountability. Reassurance. Repair. Sometimes simply saying, “You're right. I understand why that hurt. I'm here.” I didn't need grand gestures. I needed participation.

That's why the song keeps returning to the difference between peace and silence. Silence might make conflict disappear from the room temporarily, but that doesn't necessarily mean the relationship has found peace. Sometimes one person simply stops talking while the other person carries everything that remains unresolved. And I learned how lonely that can feel.

The ending isn't saying someone is cruel simply because they shut down or need time. It's recognizing that their way of protecting themselves can still have an impact on the person waiting on the other side of that silence. Space can be communicated. Time can be requested. Someone can say, “I can't do this conversation right now, but I'm not leaving it here.” That's very different from disappearing and expecting silence to do the work that repair requires. I don't need someone who never gets scared. I don't need someone who never shuts down for a moment. I need someone willing to eventually turn back toward me. Because love doesn't have to be perfect to feel safe. But it does have to come back to the conversation.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
