The story behind
If You Wanted Me is about finally realizing that wanting access to someone isn’t the same as wanting a relationship with them.
For a long time, I paid attention to the things that gave me hope. He didn’t want to lose me. He didn’t want me with someone else. He would come back when I started pulling away. And I interpreted those things as evidence that somewhere underneath the distance, he really wanted me. But eventually I started looking at what was actually happening. I was asking for consistency, reassurance, effort, and clarity while receiving just enough attention to keep me from completely walking away. I felt wanted when I was leaving, but rarely chosen when I was staying. That distinction changed everything.
The line “You don’t want me gone, but you don’t want to stay” became the heart of this song because I realized someone can be uncomfortable losing you without being willing to build a life with you. I didn’t need another explanation for why he struggled to show up. I needed to stop measuring love by potential and start measuring it by what was actually being given.
This song is the moment I stopped asking, “Does he want me?” And started asking, “Is this how I want to be loved?”
