I Loved the Monster Softly

For when understanding why they hurt you became the reason you kept staying long enough to hurt yourself.

Emotional question
Why did understanding their wounds make it so much harder for me to leave?
What you may need to hear

Understanding where someone’s behavior comes from doesn’t require you to absorb its impact. Empathy can explain someone’s pain without making their healing your responsibility or requiring you to stay somewhere that is hurting you.

Featured lyric
“I kept turning my intuition into empathy, Kept calling destruction “complexity” Kept confusing being needed with being loved”
From the song story

For when you became so good at understanding their pain that you stopped noticing how much understanding them was costing you.

VERSE 1 You wore your pain like polished gold Smile sharp enough to hide the cold Everybody loved the version you designed But I could hear the panic underneath your pride You never had to say a word I felt the violence in the hurt The little boy abandoned in the hall Still punching holes inside your walls And maybe that’s the problem I could see through every mask Most people ran from your shadows I kept trying to hold them back

PRE-CHORUS You called it love when I absorbed your storms When I translated rage into something warm I thought being chosen meant being able to survive you

CHORUS I loved the monster softly Held the knife and kissed the wound Stayed long after my own body Started breaking in two You looked at me like salvation Like I was air inside your lungs But every time I pulled you closer You disappeared from what you’d done I wasn’t weak for loving deeply I was dangerous to myself ‘Cause I could understand your darkness And still forget to save myself

VERSE 2 You said nobody ever stayed After seeing all the things you became And God… I made that my responsibility Like your healing was somehow attached to me I learned your chaos like a language Learned your silence like a threat Learned how to calm your nervous system While abandoning mine instead You wanted unconditional Until accountability arrived You wanted intimacy without exposure Love without sacrifice

PRE-CHORUS And I kept turning my intuition into empathy Kept calling destruction “complexity” Kept confusing being needed with being loved

CHORUS I loved the monster softly Held your shame like it was mine Watched your darkness flood the room Then blamed myself for drowning inside You looked at me like redemption Like I could pull you back to God But you can’t heal somebody Who survives by staying lost I wasn’t weak for loving deeply I just didn’t know when to leave I thought if I understood your pain enough You would stop causing it to me

BRIDGE Maybe I terrified you Because I saw the child beneath the king Saw the fear beneath the power The emptiness beneath everything And maybe you loved me too In the only way you knew how But love without safety Still burns the whole house down

FINAL CHORUS So I loved the monster softly Until there was nothing left of me Now I know some people confuse Emotional hunger with intimacy And I still ache when I remember The way you looked at me sometimes Like I was the first person To ever truly see behind your eyes But being seen is not the same As being capable of love And I can miss you with my whole heart Without returning to the flood

OUTRO I was never hard to love I was just willing to love what hurt me Longer than I should’ve.

I Loved the Monster Softly

For when understanding why they hurt you became the reason you kept staying long enough to hurt yourself.

I Loved the Monster Softly

"I Loved the Monster Softly" isn't about calling someone a monster. It's about what happens when you love someone whose unhealed pain begins hurting the people closest to them.

This song was born from the realization that empathy can become self-abandonment. I spent so much time trying to understand someone else's wounds that I stopped noticing the ones they were leaving on me. I believed that if I could love deeply enough, stay long enough, or understand them well enough, maybe they would finally feel safe enough to heal.

Instead, I slowly lost myself. The lyrics explore something I think many people experience but struggle to put into words: confusing compassion with responsibility. Learning someone's triggers. Calming their nervous system while neglecting your own. Carrying their shame as if it were yours to fix. Believing that being needed meant being loved.

One of the hardest truths I had to learn is that understanding why someone hurts you doesn't make the hurt acceptable. You can have compassion for someone's story and still recognize that you deserve safety. This song also holds space for grief. Because sometimes the person who hurt you wasn't entirely evil. Sometimes they were deeply wounded. Sometimes you saw the scared child underneath the walls they built. And that makes leaving even harder.

But love isn't measured by how much pain you're willing to survive. Real love doesn't require you to disappear. It doesn't ask you to sacrifice your peace, your identity, or your nervous system just to keep someone else comfortable. Love without accountability isn't healing. Love without safety isn't love at all.

If you've ever stayed because you understood someone's pain more than you honored your own... I hope this song reminds you of something important: You were never hard to love. You were simply loving someone else longer than you were loving yourself.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
