Last Call

For when you realize being their late-night comfort was never the same as being their first choice.

Emotional question
Why did being wanted when they were lonely make me feel like I was being chosen?
What you may need to hear

Someone reaching for you when they’re lonely doesn’t mean they’re choosing you. You deserve a love that makes space for you intentionally, not only when everything else has gone quiet.

Featured lyric
“I was never your first thought, I was your last call, The place you landed When nothing else worked at all”
From the song story

For when you finally realize they reached for you when they were lonely, but never made room for you when they had a choice.

Verse 1 I know the nights you go quiet You’re chasing something new Your phone lights up for everyone Before it ever lights for me and you I recognize the pattern I know the timing too You don’t reach out when you’re chosen You reach out when you’re through

Pre-Chorus When the bars close When your friends are gone That’s when my name Feels easy to want

Chorus I was never your first thought I was your last call The place you landed When nothing else worked at all You didn’t pick me in the daylight You didn’t choose me proud You only wanted me When you ran out And I couldn’t stay Where love felt optional I couldn’t keep pretending Being last still counted as chosen

Verse 2 You finished living your night Then showed up at my door I gave you warmth, I gave you comfort While you gave me nothing more I felt it every time You came after everything else Like I was only real to you When you had nothing left

Pre-Chorus You didn’t plan for me You didn’t make the space You fit me in At the end of your day

Chorus I was never your first thought I was your last call The quiet place you came to When the noise was gone You didn’t want me publicly You didn’t choose me loud You only reached for me When you ran out And I couldn’t keep loving From the bottom of your list I couldn’t keep surviving On moments stolen like this

Bridge So I closed the door at midnight Not because I didn’t care But because every time I stayed I disappeared in there I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you I left because I loved myself more And I couldn’t keep teaching my heart That being last was something to be grateful for

Final Chorus I deserve to be chosen early Not squeezed into the end I deserve someone who wants me Before the night begins So if you’re lonely now If you’re missing what you lost Remember, I was there You just waited until you ran out

Outro I hope one day you understand Why I couldn’t stay I wasn’t asking to be everything I was just asking not to be last place

Last Call

For when you realize being their late-night comfort was never the same as being their first choice.

Last Call

“Last Call” is about realizing there’s a difference between someone reaching for you and someone actually choosing you. I wrote this song about what it felt like to be wanted most when everything else was over. At the end of the night. When the plans were finished. When everyone else had gone home. When loneliness finally got louder than avoidance. That’s when there seemed to be room for me. And for a long time, I mistook those moments for intimacy.

The line, “I was never your first thought, I was your last call,” became the heart of this song because eventually I had to admit that being someone's safe place wasn't the same as having a real place in their life. I could give warmth. Comfort. Familiarity. A place where someone knew they'd be accepted. But I didn't want to only matter when there was nothing else competing for their attention.

The hardest part was that I did care. That's why the bridge matters so much: “I didn't leave because I stopped loving you. I left because I loved myself more.” Sometimes choosing yourself doesn't happen after your feelings disappear. Sometimes you have to walk away while part of you still wants to stay. I had to stop teaching my nervous system that crumbs of connection were something to be grateful for. I had to stop treating being contacted as proof of being valued and start paying attention to when, how, and why someone was showing up. Because I don't want to be someone's afterthought. I don't want to be squeezed into whatever space remains after everything else has been chosen. And I don't need to be someone's entire world.

That's what the final line means: “I wasn't asking to be everything. I was just asking not to be last place.” That's not asking for too much. That's asking to matter.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
