Love Would Have Listened

For when someone taught you to question your own boundaries, and you’re finally remembering they never needed permission to matter.

Emotional question
Was it still wrong if they said they were “just playing”?
What you may need to hear

Yes. Calling something playful doesn’t erase your pain or your boundaries. If you said they were hurting you, asked them to stop, or tried to pull away, you deserved to be listened to.

Featured lyric
“No doesn’t have to be louder, To mean exactly what it said, You called it love, But love would’ve listened instead”
From the song story

For when they called it “playing,” but you were the only one asking them to stop.

Verse 1

You'd pin my wrists like it was playful I'd say, "You're hurting me... get off." You'd only hold a little tighter Like my fear was something to laugh off You'd say, "Relax, I'm only kidding." "I didn't mean to hurt you that bad." But every "sorry" came tomorrow After you ignored the words I had You convinced me silence meant permission That pulling away meant "try again" You treated every one of my boundaries Like they were made for you to bend

Pre-Chorus I wasn't difficult to love You were difficult to hear Because every time I said "enough" You taught me not to trust my fear.

Chorus You taught me my "stop" Was something you'd negotiate You taught me to question my no Before I ever questioned you No doesn't need explaining. No doesn't need a fight. You heard every word I whispered. You just decided your want Mattered more than my rights. No doesn't have to be louder To mean exactly what it said. You called it love... But love would've listened instead.

If I say stop... You stop. If I pull away... You let me go. If I tell you you're hurting me... You let go. If I'm crying... You don't keep going. Love listens. Love never mistakes resistance... For permission. Love doesn't keep going... After hearing... "No." Just because you laughed... Didn't make it harmless. Just because you smiled... Didn't make it love. Your want mattered more than my no. You taught me my boundaries... Never mattered. Until I remembered... They always did.

Outro They say abuse is easy to see. Mine wasn't. Mine wore a smile. Mine laughed. Mine apologized. Mine said... "I didn't mean to." "I was just playing." "You know I love you." And somewhere along the way... I started believing... Love was supposed to hurt. Maybe that's why... You never accepted my "no." Because somewhere deep down... You knew... It never meant... "Maybe." It never meant... "Convince me." It never meant... "Try harder." It always meant... No.

Love Would Have Listened

" Love Would Have Listened " is about reclaiming the meaning of one simple word: No. I wrote this song because I wish more people understood that consent isn't the absence of resistance. It's the presence of respect. Abuse isn't always loud enough for other people to recognize. Sometimes it smiles. Sometimes it laughs. Sometimes it apologizes. Sometimes it says, "I didn't mean to," or "You know I love you," while continuing to ignore every boundary you set.

It doesn't always begin with obvious violence. Sometimes it begins with a joke that goes too far. A touch you didn't want. A laugh after you say, "You're hurting me." An apology that always comes after the damage is already done. Over time, those moments teach you something dangerous. They teach you to question yourself instead of the person crossing the line.

The line, "You taught me my 'stop' was something you'd negotiate," became the heart of this song. Because that's what repeated boundary violations do. They don't just leave painful memories, they slowly teach you to distrust your own instincts. Every ignored "no" makes it a little harder to believe your own voice. Every laugh after your discomfort makes you wonder if you're overreacting instead of recognizing that your boundaries deserve respect.

For a long time, I believed love meant enduring things that hurt. I thought if someone loved me, they couldn't really be harming me. Healing taught me something different. Love doesn't negotiate consent. Love doesn't keep going after someone says they're hurting. Love doesn't mistake resistance, freezing, fear, or silence for permission. And love never asks someone to abandon themselves just to be loved.

This song isn't only about what happened to me. It's about unlearning everything I was taught to accept. It's about remembering something that was always true: My boundaries mattered. My voice mattered. And my "no" never needed to be louder, justified, defended, or repeated to deserve respect. It was always enough.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
