Half In, Half Out

For when they stayed close enough to keep you hoping while emotionally leaving a little more every day.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
How can someone stay beside me while still slowly leaving the relationship?
What you may need to hear

Physical presence doesn’t always mean emotional commitment. When someone continues offering closeness and reassurance while pulling away internally, it can make you question what you’re sensing. You’re allowed to take inconsistency seriously.

Featured lyric
“You were half in, half out While I was all heart, no doubt”
From the song story

For when their body was still beside you, their words still said “love,” but everything underneath it felt like they were already leaving.

Verse 1 You were a shadow sleeping in my bed One foot with me, one foot somewhere else instead I kept searching for your eyes But you kept them closed, safe in your disguise I felt the distance every time you stayed Smiling just enough to keep me afraid To call it out, to draw the line While you kept yours safe, tangled with mine Pre-Chorus You said "we're fine" when we were breaking Told me "love" when you were faking Every word a thread to keep me bound While you quietly tore us down Chorus You were half in, half out While I was all heart, no doubt You let me drown while you touched the shore Kept me close just to want me less Kissed my mouth like a game of chess Half in, half out - I don't want that anymore Verse 2 You held me back from the truth I knew Gaslit the flames til I blamed me, not you I trusted lies because I loved the dream But love without trust is a hollow thing And the cruelest part is you let it rot When you had a hundred chances to say what you thought But control felt better than setting me free You didn't want love, you wanted power over me Pre-Chorus You said "we're fine" when we were breaking Told me "love" when you were faking Every word a thread to keep me bound While you quietly tore us down Chorus You were half in, half out While I was all heart, no doubt You let me drown while you touched the shore

Kept me close just to want me less Kissed my mouth like a game of chess Half in, half out - I don't want that anymore Bridge I'd rather be alone than on a leash Chasing scraps you call a feast I gave you love, you gave me fear But I'm burning the bridge we built here Final Chorus You were half in, half out While I was all heart, no doubt You let me drown while you touched the shore But l've cut the ties, I'm not your pawn I'm walking out, and when I'm gone You'll be the one still standing there - Half in, half out forevermore

Half In, Half Out

For when they stayed close enough to keep you hoping while emotionally leaving a little more every day.

Half In, Half Out

I wrote this about what it feels like to love someone who never fully leaves, but never fully chooses you either.

I could feel the distance long before I had proof of it. I kept asking if something had changed and trusted the reassurance I was given, even when my intuition was telling me something different. That in-between kept me holding on. There was always just enough closeness to make me believe we were okay, while another part of me could feel him pulling away.

Eventually I realized I didn’t need to keep waiting for someone else to decide whether I was worth choosing. I would rather lose someone completely than keep losing myself to someone halfway.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
