Emotional question
Was I naive for believing someone who gave me every reason in the beginning to believe them?
What you may need to hear

Trusting someone who consistently presents themselves as safe, sincere, and committed doesn't make you foolish. You weren't supposed to predict every contradiction that came later. Healing can mean learning from the inconsistency without blaming yourself for believing what you were shown.

Featured lyric
“You were a knight in shining lies, And I almost mistook you for hope”
From the song story

For when you realize you weren’t foolish for believing the beginning, you just eventually learned to trust the pattern more than the promises.

[Verse 1] You came in with that sugar voice Said I was rare, like you had no choice Told me I’m everything you ever dreamed But baby, dreams don’t cheat behind the scenes

You moved so fast, called it fate Told your friends I was the one , first date Painted forever like it was fact But now your halo's starting to crack

[Pre-Chorus] You said all the words I’d waited to hear But none of 'em matched what you did, my dear Love bombing’s just flattery in disguise When it’s followed by silence and other girls’ eyes

[Chorus] You were a knight in shining lies Told me I’m safe, while you sharpened the knife Gave me fairy tale lines with a toxic twist Played the hero while you barely exist You wore charm like armor, made me trust But real love doesn’t leave me in dust You're not brave, you're just a well-dressed ghost And I almost mistook you for hope

[Verse 2] You said, “I don’t go out much,” But you’re at girls’ night with your drink and touch Posting thirst traps like it’s no big deal While I sit here wondering which version’s real

You asked what I told my mom about you Like image means more than what you do You offered sweetness with a twist of control I wasn’t your girlfriend , I was a role

[Pre-Chorus 2] The mask is slipping, and I see it now That soft voice hides a selfish vow Your love’s a mirror you cracked in your hands And I was the fool who tried to understand

[Chorus] You were a knight in shining lies Said I’m the one, while you lived double lives Fed me stories with rehearsed charm Then turned cold when I asked you to show your heart You wore “consistency” like a game But your actions never knew your name You don’t want love , you want a fix You don’t hold hearts, you just play tricks

[Bridge] You liked me best when I didn’t ask When I smiled and let you wear your mask But I’ve seen behind the curtain now And no apology can save you now

[Final Chorus] You were a knight in shining lies But the shine wore off, and I survived Your armor’s dented, your truth’s a scar You don’t love me , you love who you aren’t So keep the lines, the charm, the act I’m done losing myself to get you back You’re not my hero, not this time I’m done mistaking wounds for signs

[Outro] You said I’m pretty, said I’m rare But I’m not yours to break and wear I’m not the girl who falls for shine I’m the girl who knows the signs

Shiny Lies

For when the promises were beautiful, but eventually their actions told you a completely different story.

Shiny Lies

“Shiny Lies” is about realizing that sometimes the version of someone you fall for is the version they worked hardest to show you. I wrote this song about the difference between being intensely pursued and being genuinely loved. In the beginning, everything can feel almost too perfect. The compliments. The attention. The promises. The certainty. Someone tells you you're different, you're rare, you're exactly what they've been looking for. They move quickly, speak confidently about the future, and make you feel like something extraordinary has finally found you. And when you've wanted that kind of love for a long time, it's easy to believe you've finally found it. But words are easy. Consistency is harder.

The line, “You were a knight in shining lies.” became the heart of this song because that's eventually what the relationship felt like: someone presenting himself as the hero while his actions slowly contradicted the character he wanted me to believe he was. And I think that's what makes these dynamics so confusing. The “shiny” part doesn't necessarily mean every affectionate moment was fake. Someone can mean a compliment when they say it. They can genuinely feel excited about you. They can enjoy making you feel special. But intensity isn't intimacy. Charm isn't character. Attention isn't commitment. And promises aren't proof. Eventually, I stopped listening only to what he said and started paying attention to what he consistently did. That's when the shine started wearing off.

Another line that matters to me is: “You asked what I told my mom about you Like image means more than what you do.” It made me think about the difference between being perceived as a good partner and actually being one. Someone can care deeply about how they're seen while avoiding the uncomfortable things real intimacy requires: honesty, accountability, consistency, vulnerability, and repair. And I spent too long trying to reconcile those two versions. The charming one. And the one his actions revealed. Every contradiction made me search harder for an explanation because I wanted the beginning to be the truth. I wanted the person who made all those beautiful promises to eventually become consistent with them. But eventually I realized I didn't need to keep deciding which version was “real.” The inconsistency itself was information.

The ending isn't about being embarrassed that I believed him. I believed what I was being shown and told. Trusting someone isn't something I need to punish myself for afterward. The growth is that now I know to look beyond the shine. I don't need someone who knows exactly what to say. I want someone whose actions make me feel secure enough that I don't have to keep analyzing whether their words are true. Because the lesson of “Shiny Lies” isn't that I'll never trust again. It's that next time, I'll trust consistency more than intensity, actions more than promises, and character more than charm.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
