Two Endings

For when they left the door open just enough to make you grieve the ending twice.

Emotional question
Why did losing the “friendship” hurt like losing them all over again?
What you may need to hear

An unclear ending can keep hope alive long after a relationship ends. Grieving the connection twice doesn’t mean you failed to let go. It means you were given two different endings to process.

Featured lyric
“You said we’d still be something, not goodbye, Left a door open just enough to keep me tied, But silence hit me louder than the truth, And now I’m grieving twice because of you”
From the song story

For when you started accepting the goodbye, only to be given another version of “us” that disappeared too.

Verse 1 I was already halfway out the door Quiet peace I never had before Didn’t need a promise, didn’t need a plan I was letting go the best I can Then you reached back, softened up the fall Said we didn’t have to lose it all “Still be in your life, just not the same” But you lit a light you couldn’t maintain

Pre-Chorus You made it sound like we’d still exist Just a different version of this

Chorus You said we’d still be something, not goodbye Left a door open just enough to keep me tied But silence hit me louder than the truth And now I’m grieving twice because of you You didn’t end it clean, you blurred the line Gave me something soft, then took it back in time If this was you protecting me somehow Why does it hurt more now?

Verse 2 You didn’t want to wear the weight of it So you dressed it up in something delicate Called it “friendship,” called it “we’ll be fine” But there was never action behind the lines I would’ve taken honest over kind If kind just means you’re leaving me behind In something vague I couldn’t understand While you just slipped right through my hands

Pre-Chorus You tried to make it easier to leave But all you did was double what I grieve

Bridge Don’t call it care if you can’t follow through Don’t call it love if it’s convenient to you You say you didn’t want to be the one But you became the one I can’t outrun You could’ve just been honest from the start Instead you left me holding half a heart A version of us that never stood a chance Just words with no hands

Final Chorus You said we’d still be something , you were wrong I don’t exist in places I don’t belong I’m closing every door you left half-wide No more almosts in my life You didn’t break me, just made it clear I need truth, not comfort disappearing So take your silence, I’ll take my peace This is where you lose me

Two Endings

For when they left the door open just enough to make you grieve the ending twice.

Two Endings

“Two Endings” is about what happens when someone tries to soften a goodbye so much that they accidentally make you experience it twice.

I wrote this song about reaching a point where I was finally beginning to accept that something was over. I was finding a little peace in letting go. Then he came back with the idea that maybe we didn't have to completely lose each other, that we could still be something, just in a different way. And I believed him. That small amount of hope was enough to reopen a door I had already started closing.

The line, “You said we'd still be something, not goodbye,” became the heart of this song because that's exactly what made the second loss hurt differently. I could have handled the truth. What was harder was being given a softer version of the ending that his actions couldn't actually sustain. He may have thought saying we'd remain in each other's lives was kinder than giving me a clean goodbye. But when those words eventually turned into silence, I wasn't just grieving the relationship anymore. I was grieving the version of friendship, connection, or continued presence I'd been told would remain too. That's why the song says, “Now I'm grieving twice because of you.” Once for what we were. And again for what I was told we could still be.

This song helped me understand that kindness without follow-through can sometimes create more pain than honesty would have. I don't need someone to make the truth prettier for me. I need them to make it clear. The final chorus is where that realization becomes a boundary. Instead of waiting beside a door someone else left half-open, I finally close it myself. “I don't exist in places I don't belong. I'm closing every door you left half-wide.”

That's what this song ultimately means to me. No more almost relationships. No more almost friendships. No more promises of connection without the actions to sustain them. I'd rather grieve one honest ending than keep surviving a hundred softer ones.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
