Underdeveloped

For when you realize empathy became self-abandonment because you kept explaining the behavior that was hurting you.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
When did understanding why they hurt me become a reason I thought I had to keep accepting it?
What you may need to hear

You can understand where someone’s behavior comes from without making yourself responsible for tolerating it. Trauma, fear, or difficulty with intimacy can provide context, but they don’t erase another person’s responsibility for how their choices affect you. Compassion can exist alongside boundaries.

Featured lyric
“You got used to being held without ever learning how to hold somebody back”
From the song story

For when you spent so long understanding the pain behind their behavior that you stopped asking what their behavior was doing to you.

Verse 1
You wore your damage like a warning label
Like I was supposed to read it and stay soft
 You called your silence “self-protection”
While I carried both of us through every loss You took my body like a safe house
Took my patience like a drug
Took the parts of me that loved too hard Then called it pressure when I needed love You let me build a home in someone
Already halfway out the door
And every time I felt the distance
You just pulled away some more

Pre-Chorus
 Now I see it clearly
You didn’t love me carelessly That would’ve hurt less You loved me knowingly

Chorus
 Stop calling it avoidance
When you knew exactly what you did
You took the comfort, took the loyalty
Then disappeared inside yourself again You let me hold your shaking hands
While rehearsing your escape God, you looked so wounded I mistook your damage for depth

But trauma doesn’t make it noble
To take until there’s nothing left
You had access to my heart
Without the courage to protect it And that’s the part that haunts me most You knew I was rare, something real But self-destruction felt more familiar

Verse 2
 You loved being understood
More than you ever loved being honest
Loved the way I stayed calm
Every time your chaos made me nauseous You called me “too emotional”
Anytime I asked for truth
 Like accountability was cruelty
And your distance was some wound I kept translating all your silence
Into stories that made sense
Because believing you were damaged
Hurts less than seeing your neglect

Pre-Chorus
Maybe you weren’t complicated
 Maybe it’s painfully simple
You liked the feeling of being loved
 Without becoming someone capable Chorus
Stop calling it avoidance
When you knew exactly what you did
You took the safety, took the devotion
Then vanished when it got too real again You said “I love you” with one foot out
And called your fear an excuse
But fear doesn’t erase the damage
Of what you knowingly put me through You fed on my forgiveness
 While starving me of truth
And now you’ll spend your whole life
Meeting people who don’t love like I do

Bridge
I held the parts of you you couldn’t face
And you made me feel hard to love
Do you understand the difference? You got used to being held
Without ever learning how to hold somebody back And one day
when nobody waits through your silence
 when nobody overexplains your cruelty
when nobody turns themselves inside out
trying to understand you, That’s when it’ll hit. Not every person who leaves you
was asking for too much. Maybe they just finally realized
you were never going to grow.

Final Chorus So stop romanticizing your distance
Like it made you deep
You weren’t some tragic mystery
You were just scared to keep Something honest
Something rare
Someone that saw you fully
And stayed there And I was never hard to love
 You were just underdeveloped
And too afraid To become the man I deserved

Outro
I understand why you are the way you are
That’s why I finally left Because empathy without boundaries
Is how people like you keep access

For when you realize empathy became self-abandonment because you kept explaining the behavior that was hurting you.

Underdeveloped

“Underdeveloped” is about the moment empathy stopped being an excuse for me to abandon myself. For a long time, I understood why he was the way he was. I could see the fear underneath the distance. I could recognize the wounds underneath the avoidance. I could understand why intimacy might feel threatening, why vulnerability could make someone retreat, and why being deeply known might feel uncomfortable. And because I understood it, I kept forgiving it. That's what this song is really about.

I became so focused on understanding the reasons behind his behavior that I stopped asking whether the behavior itself was acceptable. The line, “I mistook your damage for depth.” became one of the most important lines in the song. Because I think sometimes we can romanticize emotional unavailability. We see walls and assume there must be something incredibly deep behind them. We interpret silence as complexity. Distance becomes evidence of hidden pain. Inconsistency becomes something we believe enough patience and understanding might eventually heal. And sometimes there really is pain underneath those things. But pain doesn't automatically make harmful behavior okay.

Eventually, I had to understand that explaining behavior and excusing behavior are two completely different things. Someone can have trauma and still be responsible for how they treat people. Someone can be afraid of intimacy and still be responsible for the promises they make. Someone can struggle with vulnerability and still be responsible for what they take from another person and what they give back.

The line, “You got used to being held Without ever learning how to hold somebody back.” is really the heart of this song for me. I gave understanding because I knew what it felt like to be wounded. I knew how to sit beside someone else's pain. I knew how to translate distance into fear, anger into hurt, and withdrawal into something I could empathize with. But understanding became dangerous when I started using it to explain away what was happening to me. I could spend hours asking: Why is he like this? What happened to make him shut down? What is he afraid of? How can I make this feel safer for him? And completely forget to ask: How do I feel in this relationship? That question changed everything. Because his wounds could be real and so could mine. His fear could deserve compassion without requiring my self-abandonment. And understanding why someone struggled to love me well didn't obligate me to stay until they learned how.

That's why the ending matters so much: “I understand why you are the way you are, That’s why I finally left.” Understanding him didn't make me hate him. It gave me enough clarity to stop trying to save him. I don't have to turn someone into a villain before I'm allowed to leave. I don't have to decide their wounds aren't real. And I don't have to stop having empathy for someone before I'm allowed to protect myself from the impact of their behavior. That's the distinction I didn't understand before. Empathy needs boundaries. Otherwise, I can become so busy understanding another person's pain that I disappear inside my own. I can understand. I can have compassion. I can hope someone heals. And I can still decide they don't get access to me while I'm the one paying the price for wounds they aren't willing to address.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
