Unfinished Equation

For when you realize you’re not only struggling to let go of the person, you’re struggling to let go of the answer you never received.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
How do I let someone go when my mind still believes there’s an answer that would finally make everything make sense?
What you may need to hear

You don’t have to solve every unanswered question before you’re allowed to move forward. An unexplained ending can leave your mind searching for certainty, but not having every answer doesn’t mean you missed something or failed to understand the relationship. Sometimes closure is deciding you no longer need to keep solving what another person left unfinished.

Featured lyric
“You gave me silence And my mind turned it into infinity”
From the song story

For when you realize part of what you’re grieving isn’t only the person, but the explanation your mind believed it needed in order to release them.

VERSE 1 You disappeared without a warning No final truth, no final fight Just silence hanging in the doorway Like you vanished mid-sentence one night And everybody tells me healing Starts when you let go and move on But my mind was built for answers And you left me with none

PRE-CHORUS Now every memory feels loaded Every word has seventeen meanings I replay us like surveillance footage Trying to find where you stopped needing me

CHORUS You turned my brain into an unfinished equation A question mark I carry everywhere And no contact feels less like distance More like emotional air deprivation I don't just miss you I miss resolving you My nervous system keeps reaching For a door that won't move And maybe that's the cruelest part Of loving someone who leaves quietly You gave me silence And my mind turned it into infinity

VERSE 2 I build fifty different versions Of why you suddenly went cold Maybe you got scared of closeness Maybe you stopped loving me months ago Maybe I was too emotional Maybe I finally became too real Maybe your silence says nothing But my body still searches for meaning still

PRE-CHORUS I know intelligence should help me But it only makes the loops run deeper Because analytical minds don't rest Until they finish what they're trying to solve

CHORUS You turned my brain into an unfinished equation An open loop that never closes right

Now every quiet room becomes a courtroom Where I put myself on trial at night I don't just grieve you I grieve the explanation too Because closure isn't weakness When your nervous system was built around truth

BRIDGE People say "if they wanted to, they would" Like that's enough to stop the ache But my body still waits for resolution Like your silence is a code I have to break And maybe I don't miss you anymore Maybe I miss certainty Maybe I miss knowing where I stood Before you disappeared from me

FINAL CHORUS You turned my brain into an unfinished equation But I'm slowly learning not every ending speaks Some people leave without explaining And the silence has nothing to do with me So maybe healing isn't solving Every mystery they left behind Maybe healing is surviving Without needing every answer to survive

OUTRO The hardest thing I ever learned Was that closure sometimes sounds like silence And the story still ends Even when nobody explains why.

Unfinished Equation

For when you realize you’re not only struggling to let go of the person, you’re struggling to let go of the answer you never received.

Unfinished Equation

“Unfinished Equation” is about what happens when someone leaves without giving your mind anywhere to put the ending. I wrote this song about the obsessive search for an explanation that can happen when someone disappears, cuts contact, or leaves without really explaining why. My mind doesn't naturally leave unanswered questions alone. It analyzes. It reconstructs conversations. It searches memories for clues. It tries to find the missing piece that will make everything else suddenly make sense. So when there was no final answer, my brain started creating hundreds of possible ones. Maybe he got scared. Maybe his feelings changed months earlier. Maybe I missed something. Maybe I was too much. Maybe there was one conversation I could replay differently and finally understand.

That's where the line, “You turned my brain into an unfinished equation.” came from. The relationship had technically ended, but my mind was still working on it. Every memory became evidence. Every conversation seemed like it might contain some clue I hadn't noticed the first hundred times I replayed it. And eventually I realized something that changed the way I understood my grief: I wasn't only grieving the person. I was grieving the explanation I thought I needed in order to let the person go. That's the heart of this song.

The line, “I don’t just miss you I miss resolving you.” captures it better than anything else. Sometimes what keeps me mentally attached isn't even the belief that the relationship should come back. It's the belief that there must be an answer that would finally make the ending feel complete. If I could just understand why, maybe my brain could finally put the story away. But the search for certainty can become its own kind of attachment. Every new theory creates another question. Every memory opens another door. And suddenly the person may be gone, but I'm still spending hours inside a relationship that only exists in my head now. For me, closure can feel especially difficult when my mind believes understanding something will make it safe. If I know exactly what happened, maybe I can prevent it from happening again. If I know exactly when someone's feelings changed, maybe I can recognize it sooner next time. If I figure out what I did wrong, maybe I can make sure nobody ever leaves that way again. But sometimes there is no final piece of information that makes everything click. And sometimes another person's silence isn't a code I'm supposed to break.

That's where the final chorus changes the song. “Maybe healing isn’t solving every mystery they left behind.” I don't have to decide that the questions never mattered. I don't have to pretend I wouldn't still like answers. I'm simply learning that my ability to heal cannot depend on another person eventually giving me information they may never give me. Maybe closure isn't finally figuring out why someone left. Maybe it's realizing the story can still have an ending without the explanation I wanted. Maybe I can leave some questions unanswered without spending the rest of my life inside them. And maybe the equation doesn't actually need to be solved. Maybe I can simply stop working on it.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
