What You Never Had

For when you kept giving more because you thought enough love could teach someone how to give it back.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why did I feel responsible for teaching someone how to love me?
What you may need to hear

Understanding what someone may not have learned or received can create compassion, but it doesn't make their growth your responsibility. You can offer healthy love without being responsible for teaching another person how to reciprocate it.

[Verse 1] I gave you warmth you didn’t know, Built you a home inside my soul. I tried to pour into the cracks, But love can’t teach what you never had. Your silence dressed as strength, But it was just distance, arm’s-length. I begged for honesty, you called me “too much,” But I was starving for the simplest touch.

[Pre-Chorus] You think respect’s negotiable, But I know what I’m worth. You laughed through the damage, I bled through the hurt.

[Chorus] I tried to give you what you never had, But now I see why, it was never in your hands. You can’t hold love if you never learned, You just watch it crash and let it burn. I won’t twist myself to fit your lack, It’s not my job to carry that. I tried to give you what you never had, And now I’m done, I’m taking it back.

[Verse 2] Hot and cold, like a game you play, Truth gets lost in the words you say. Your promises never matched your hands, Leaving me with questions you couldn’t stand. My emotions, dismissed, ignored, Like knocking on a locked-up door. I wanted repair, you wanted escape, But silence is violence when love’s at stake.

[Pre-Chorus] You think my boundaries are chains, But they’re the baseline of care. I won’t shrink for your comfort, If you can’t meet me there.

[Bridge] You can’t be convinced, You can’t be begged. Love doesn’t grow Where it’s left for dead. Changing your mind was impossible, But saving myself was unstoppable.

[Final Chorus] I tried to give you what you never had, But love can’t survive when it’s one-sided like that. Your walls were prisons, not worth the key, And I found freedom inside of me. I won’t twist myself to fit your lack, It’s not my job to carry that. I tried to give you what you never had, But now I know… I deserve more than that.

[Outro] I gave you a chance, I gave all I am, But you can’t receive what you don’t understand. I tried to give you what you never had… And now I see why you never had it.

What You Never Had

What You Never Had

“What You Never Had” is about realizing that you can give someone a kind of love they may have never experienced before, but you cannot make them emotionally capable of receiving it.

I wrote this song because for a long time, I thought understanding someone's wounds meant I could love around them. If I was patient enough, safe enough, forgiving enough, gentle enough, maybe eventually he would trust the love I was giving him and learn how to give it back. So I kept pouring into places that never seemed to fill.

The line, “I tried to give you what you never had, but love can't teach what you never learned,” became the heart of this song. Because eventually I understood that love isn't rehabilitation. I could model healthy communication, ask for repair, explain my boundaries, and offer emotional safety, but I couldn't do the internal work for another person. And every time I tried, I ended up doing more of the relationship for both of us. I started confusing empathy with responsibility. His wounds became something I thought I needed to accommodate. His distance became something I needed to understand. His inability to communicate became something I needed to explain better. Meanwhile, my own needs kept getting smaller.

That's why “It's not my job to carry that” is such an important line for me. I can have compassion for what someone never received. I can understand how their past shaped their capacity for intimacy. But their history doesn't require me to sacrifice my future. And boundaries aren't punishment. They're not chains. They're the baseline for being able to love someone without abandoning yourself.

The ending is where the song changes from trying to give him something to finally giving it back to myself. I spent so much time trying to show someone what safe, consistent love could feel like. Eventually, I realized I deserved to experience that kind of love too.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
