You Knew Better

For when you learned to say your needs as gently as possible, but they still heard your hurt as an attack.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why did asking for connection always seem to make them feel criticized or pull farther away?
What you may need to hear

Expressing hurt or asking for reassurance isn't automatically criticism. When emotional conversations repeatedly become defensiveness or withdrawal, you can start believing you need to communicate perfectly to be heard. A healthy relationship leaves room for needs without requiring one person to erase them.

Featured lyric
“I whispered, “This hurts” You heard, “I hate you” I said, “I need” You said, “I blame you””
From the song story

For when you kept making your pain softer and softer, hoping eventually you could say it gently enough that they wouldn’t hear it as blame.

I said it soft so you wouldn't break Still you flinched like love was a mistake I wasn't screaming, just needing grace But every word made you look away

[Pre-Chorus] I held my hurt in gentle hands Tried to build a bridge, you built a dam You said, "I don't wanna fight," But I never raised my voice that night

[Chorus] You knew better I deserved better Told you what was breaking me You kept pressing on the same old fracture Trust was something I begged for Safety - something you swore But you shut me out, shut me down Now I'm screaming in a ghost town

[Verse 2] Every "I feel" was a loaded gun In your world, emotions weigh a ton You laughed it off, called me too much But I was starving for a softer touch

[Pre-Chorus] l asked you how to reach you right You said you "don't have answers tonight" I wasn't trying to pick a fight I was trying to make us feel alright

[Chorus] You knew better I needed better Shared the scars I kept in silence Met with shame, defense, and violence Told you I felt unseen You turned it back on me Like I'm the storm, when you're the match Always running, never looking back

[Bridge] I'm not your mother, not your sin Not your past you buried in You want love without the cost But real connection's what you lost I whispered, "This hurts," You heard, "I hate you" I said, "I need," You said, "I blame you" You feared the depth, so you stayed shallow Now your silence echoes hollow

[Final Chorus ] You knew better But you didn't bother You had my heart in your hands And you dropped it like water I deserved more than panic and pride Than your fear disguised as "I tried" So I'm done explaining my pain To someone who runs from the rain

You Knew Better

You Knew Better is about what it feels like to tell someone exactly where you’re hurting and watch them keep touching the same wound.

I wrote this about trying so hard to communicate in a way that felt safe for someone else. I softened my words. I watched my tone. I explained that I wasn’t attacking or blaming them. I wasn’t asking for perfection. I was trying to tell someone I loved what I needed in order to feel safe and connected. But somehow, my hurt kept being heard as criticism. “I feel” became “you’re blaming me.” “I need” became “I’m not good enough.” “Can we talk?” became conflict before the conversation even began. Eventually I realized I was spending so much energy trying to make my pain comfortable for someone else that there was barely any room left for the pain itself.

That’s what You Knew Better is about. Once someone knows what hurts you, what happens next matters. I could explain myself more gently, choose better words, and try another approach, but I couldn’t do both sides of communication. The song ends when I stop trying to find the perfect way to explain my pain to someone who keeps experiencing my honesty as something to escape from.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
