You Were My Placeholder

For when you realize you weren’t only settling for less from them, you had stopped believing you deserved more for yourself.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why did I accept so much less than what I knew I wanted when I was already struggling to feel worthy?
What you may need to hear

What you accepted during a period of low self-worth doesn’t define what you deserve. You don’t have to shame the version of yourself who stayed. You can understand what she was looking for, rebuild trust with yourself, and choose differently now.

Featured lyric
“Losing you means finding me again”
From the song story

For when you stop being angry at yourself for settling and start understanding that the version of you who accepted less needed love too.

Verse 1 I met you when I hated myself, lowest I’d ever been, living in hell. I wanted comfort, I wanted familiar, so I let your chaos feel like shelter.

Pre-Chorus I had standards higher than sky, held out for years ‘cause no one could climb. But I traded it all for your cheap disguise, lost my value in your lies.

Chorus You stole my self-esteem, cheated, lied, left me guessing in between. Never told me where I stood, never showed me what you could. But I see it now, I was settling sore you were my placeholder, nothing more. Goodbye to you, I love me more.

Verse 2 You kept me chasing shadows in the dark, starving for scraps of a half-beating heart. Your silence carved me into doubt, while you let my fire burn out.

Pre-Chorus I was mad at me for letting you in, called your neglect a love I could win. But the truth is clearer than it’s ever been: losing you means finding me again.

Chorus You stole my self-esteem, cheated, lied, left me guessing in between. Never told me where I stood, never showed me what you could. But I see it now, I was settling sore you were my placeholder, nothing more. Goodbye to you, I love me more.

Bridge I’m taking it back, every piece you broke, the girl you silenced, the words I choked. No more guessing, no more games, I know my worth, I reclaim my name.

Final Chorus You stole my self-esteem, but I built it back stronger than your cruelty. I know where I stand, I know how I feel, and this time the love is real. You were my placeholder, nothing more, goodbye forever, I love me more.

Outro Placeholder. Placeholder. I love me more.

You Were My Placeholder

For when you realize you weren’t only settling for less from them, you had stopped believing you deserved more for yourself.

You Were My Placeholder

“You Were My Placeholder” is about looking back at a relationship and realizing the person I was most angry with wasn't actually him. It was me. I wrote this song about meeting someone during a period when my relationship with myself was already fragile. I had spent years knowing what I wanted and what I wouldn't accept, but when I was at one of my lowest points, familiarity and connection started feeling more important than maintaining those standards. So I accepted things the old version of me wouldn't have. Uncertainty. Half-effort. Silence. Being left guessing where I stood. Receiving scraps and trying to turn them into proof that I was loved. And every time I accepted less, I lost a little more trust in myself.

The line, “I was mad at me for letting you in.” became the heart of this song because that's where so much of my anger eventually landed. Why did I tolerate that? Why did I keep going back? Why did I accept uncertainty when I knew I wanted commitment? Why did I abandon standards I had spent years building? For a while, I thought healing meant becoming angry enough at myself that I would never make those choices again. But shame wasn't bringing me back to myself. Loving myself was.

That's why: “Goodbye to you I love me more.” means more to me than simply choosing myself over a relationship. It's about choosing myself over my old patterns. I can't change what I tolerated when I was hurting. But I can understand why connection felt so important to me then. I can have compassion for the version of myself who was trying to find comfort wherever she could. And I can rebuild the self-esteem that makes those things unacceptable to me now.

That's why the bridge changes the entire song: “I'm taking it back.” My voice. My standards. My confidence. My ability to trust myself. My identity outside of whether somebody chooses me.

The title has another meaning for me too. Maybe he was a placeholder during a period when I didn't know how to fully choose myself. Maybe I was trying to fill something inside me with a relationship that could never actually fill it. But the answer isn't punishing myself for that. It's becoming protective of the woman I am now. I'm not angry at the girl who stayed anymore. I'm becoming her protector. And this time, when I'm asked to choose between keeping someone else and keeping myself: I love me more.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
