“Performing for love, praying I’d finally be enough But the ache never left my blood”
The story behind
Already Chosen
“Already Chosen” is about realizing how much of my life I spent trying to earn something I was never supposed to have to earn in the first place: the feeling of being chosen. I wrote this song because that pattern existed long before any one relationship. I learned to be useful. Accommodating. Successful. Strong. The person who could handle everything. I became good at figuring out what other people needed from me and becoming that version of myself. And somewhere along the way, achievement and love became tangled together. If I could be good enough, helpful enough, successful enough, understanding enough, maybe people would stay.
The line, “Every room I walked into, I became what they needed me to,” is one of the most personal parts of this song because it describes a survival pattern I didn't recognize as a survival pattern for a long time. I thought I was simply loving people well. Sometimes I was. But sometimes I was abandoning myself to prevent abandonment from someone else. That's why this song isn't really about heartbreak. It's about the wound underneath so many of my heartbreaks. The need to be chosen. Every rejection, unanswered message, friendship that faded, relationship that ended, or person who couldn't meet me emotionally seemed to reinforce the same belief: Try harder. Become more. Give more. Then maybe you'll finally be enough. And my body carried all of it.
The bridge is where the entire meaning changes. “You chose me before I could prove myself.” For me, that's God. My faith gave me a completely different answer to the question I'd spent my life asking. My worth wasn't waiting at the end of another achievement or inside somebody else's decision to stay. I was already loved. Already seen. Already known. Already chosen. And that doesn't magically erase trauma or make my nervous system forget everything it learned. The song specifically says, “Not because the pain disappeared, but because I stopped believing I had to earn being seen.” That's what healing looks like for me.
The final chorus also turns outward because I wanted this song to reach the person who's exhausted from performing for love. The person whose body is keeping score. The person pouring from an empty place because they believe being needed is the closest they'll ever get to being loved. I know that person because I've been her. And this song is what I wish I could tell her: You don't have to exhaust yourself proving that you're worthy of being chosen. You were worthy before anybody stayed. You were worthy after they left. And you were never forgotten by God in between.
