Believe Me

For when people see the few hours you function and miss everything your mind and body pay for afterward.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why do I feel like I have to prove I’m struggling just because I don’t always look sick?
What you may need to hear

A good hour, a smile, or a day when you can show up doesn’t erase the harder hours people don’t witness. You shouldn’t have to perform your pain constantly for your limitations to deserve compassion.

Featured lyric
“Don’t mistake the mask for healing, Or the smile I forced in place.”
From the song story

For when people mistake the moments you manage to show up for proof that the struggle they don’t see must not be real.

[Verse 1] There’s something sharp about silence, When you’re screaming inside and they still don’t hear. My body’s on fire, my mind misfires, But to you, it all looks clear. Plans in my head, but I can’t make the move, The bridge collapses between want and proof. And you call it lazy, but it’s biology, A nervous system I can’t soothe.

[Chorus] So believe me when I say I’m hurting, Believe me when I can’t today. Don’t mistake the mask for healing, Or the smile I forced in place. You only see the highlight reel, Not the nights I disappear. I don’t need comparison, I need compassion, I just need someone here.

[Verse 2] You saw me laughing for three good hours, Didn’t see me pay for seventy-two. The swelling, the crashes, the body that betrays me, The grief of what I lose. Strong on the outside, unraveling within, Punished for surviving, silenced again. You call me fine, but you missed the signs, This is not the life I’d choose.

[Chorus] So believe me when I say I’m hurting, Believe me when I can’t today. Don’t mistake the mask for healing, Or the smile I forced in place. You only see the highlight reel, Not the nights I disappear. I don’t need comparison, I need compassion, I just need someone here.

[Bridge — stripped down] I’m not asking for pity, I’m asking for grace, For someone to step in, to sit in this space. To see past the picture, the posts, the disguise, To say ‘you’re not alone’ and mean it this time.

[Final Chorus — cinematic release] So believe me when I say I’m fighting, Even when I fall apart. Every ‘nothing’ takes me everything, Every silence breaks my heart. I don’t want your fixes, I don’t need your cure, Just see all of me—the messy, the pure. I don’t need comparison, I need compassion, That’s what I’m aching for.

[Outro — soft piano, spoken] Just because you can’t see it, Doesn’t mean I’m not carrying it. Believe me.

Believe Me

For when people see the few hours you function and miss everything your mind and body pay for afterward.

Believe Me

“Believe Me” is about how exhausting it can feel when the hardest parts of what you’re carrying are also the easiest parts for other people to miss. There have been times when I could show up, laugh, take pictures, make plans, or have a genuinely good few hours. From the outside, that can look like evidence that I’m doing fine. But people don't always see what it took to get there or what happens afterward.

The line, “You saw me laughing for three good hours, Didn’t see me pay for seventy-two.” became the heart of this song because it captures something I wish more people understood about invisible struggles. A good moment doesn't cancel a difficult condition. Being able to do something once doesn't necessarily mean I can do it consistently. And enjoying myself while I'm there doesn't mean my body won't ask me to pay for that energy later.

The song is also about the emotional weight of constantly feeling like you need to prove that you're struggling. When people can't see pain, exhaustion, nervous-system overload, or what is happening internally, it can be easy for them to judge what they can see. A smile becomes “you must be fine.” A social post becomes “you seem better.” One productive day becomes evidence that tomorrow should be just as easy. Eventually, that can make you feel like you're only allowed to be believed when you're visibly falling apart. I don't want that.

The chorus says: “Don’t mistake the mask for healing, Or the smile I forced in place.” Not every smile is forced, either. That's important to me. I can genuinely laugh and still be struggling. I can enjoy a beautiful day while living in a body or mind that's having a difficult one. Joy and pain aren't mutually exclusive. And Believe Me isn't asking for pity.

The line “I don't need comparison, I need compassion” is really the point. I don't need someone to fix everything. I don't need them to understand every sensation perfectly. Sometimes I just need the people I love to believe me when I say something is hard, even when what they're looking at doesn't seem to match. Because some of the most difficult things a person carries never make it into the picture. Sometimes being believed is its own kind of relief.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
