Emotional question
What if healthy love feels different because I’m finally not being asked to chase it?
What you may need to hear

Healthy connection doesn’t have to recreate the anxiety, uncertainty, or chase you once associated with chemistry. Sometimes experiencing consistency is what finally shows you how much energy you were spending trying to earn closeness before.

Featured lyric
“Butterflies were just wasps in disguise, Took your chaos and dressed it as “highs””
From the song story

For when being loved with consistency finally makes you realize how much of your old “chemistry” was actually uncertainty.

You’re blowing up my phone again, Saying you’ve changed, want what we had then. Funny how you only miss my face, Now that I’ve moved on to a better place.

Pre-Chorus With you it was silence, questions, and games, Now I hear his love every time he says my name.

Chorus My ex wants me back, but boy it’s too late, I’ve got someone who loves me without all the weight. He tells me I’m beautiful, soft when he speaks, Not scared to be honest, not scared to be weak. You’re a ghost in the shadows, still calling my name, But it’s better this way, yeah it’s better this way.

Verse 2 You made me doubt if I was enough, Left me addicted to your push and shove. But he makes me laugh, he makes me believe, He gives without asking, he makes it so easy.

Pre-Chorus You kept me guessing, kept me confused, Now I get love that I’ll never lose.

Bridge Butterflies were just wasps in disguise, Took your chaos and dressed it as “highs.” Now I’ve got peace, and I’ve got grace, You can’t compete, you’ve been replaced.

Final Chorus My ex wants me back, but I won’t look away, I’ve got someone who shows me love every day. He tells me I’m beautiful, soft when he speaks, He gives me the safety I used to seek. You’re a ghost in the shadows, still calling my name, But it’s better this way, yeah it’s better this way.

Better This Way

“Better This Way” is about finally experiencing the kind of love that makes you realize just how exhausting the old kind was. I wrote this song about the contrast between being with someone who kept me questioning where I stood and imagining what it would feel like to be with someone who made his feelings clear. For so long, I associated butterflies with chemistry. The uncertainty. The waiting. The rush when someone finally gave me attention after pulling away. The relief when they came back. I thought those intense highs meant I was deeply in love.

The line, “Butterflies were just wasps in disguise,” became the heart of this song. Because sometimes what feels like chemistry is actually anxiety. Sometimes the butterflies aren't saying, “This is your person.” They're saying, “I don't know if I'm safe here.” And that's what makes “Better This Way” different from a lot of my heartbreak songs. It isn't really about the ex wanting me back. It's about realizing I don't want the old dynamic back. I want someone who tells me I'm beautiful without making me wonder what he's thinking. Someone who communicates instead of disappearing. Someone who can be vulnerable without treating vulnerability like weakness. Someone whose affection doesn't have to be earned over and over again. The biggest shift is realizing that healthy love might initially feel less intoxicating precisely because I'm not constantly fighting to keep it. There's no dramatic high after days of distance. There's just consistency. And I'm learning that consistency can be its own kind of chemistry.

The ending isn't “look what you lost.” It's “look what I finally learned I deserve.” Maybe the relationship ending wasn't the worst thing that happened to me. Maybe it created space for me to stop chasing love that kept activating my wounds and eventually recognize love that doesn't. Maybe it really is... better this way.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
