Someone coming back doesn’t automatically mean they’ve grown. You’re allowed to need more than their return. You’re allowed to need them to return ready.
The story behind
Came Back Wrong
"Came Back Wrong" is about realizing that someone can come back into your life without actually coming back to the relationship.
I wrote this song after someone I loved returned, and for a moment, I thought everything was finally going to be different. I thought the time apart had changed something. I believed we'd have the conversations we'd avoided before. I believed we'd finally choose each other completely.
Instead, we slipped right back into the same pattern. We spent time together. We laughed. We shared meals. We held each other. From the outside, it looked like we were finding our way back. But underneath it all, nothing that actually mattered had changed. The conversations still didn't happen. The honesty I was asking for never came. The uncertainty was still there. I realized he hadn't come back ready to build a relationship. He came back because I was familiar. Because I was safe. Because I loved him. But familiarity isn't the same thing as commitment.
One of the hardest parts was that I gave him every opportunity to tell me the truth. I told him if he wasn't all in, we could just be friends. I told him he didn't have to force something he didn't feel. I wasn't trying to keep him, I was trying to make sure we were choosing each other for the right reasons. Instead, he kept telling me what I needed to hear to stay. Looking back, I don't think he came back with bad intentions. I think he missed the comfort, the connection, and the parts of me that made him feel less alone. But missing someone isn't the same as being ready to love them.
That's what this song is really about. Sometimes people come back because they miss what you gave them, not because they've become the person who can finally give you what you needed. For a long time, I confused someone's return with growth. I thought if they came back, it meant they had changed. Sometimes they haven't. Sometimes they just come back wrong. And learning the difference between someone returning and someone returning ready was one of the hardest lessons I've ever had to learn.
