Chemical Ghost

For when leaving was the right choice, but your body still grieves the cycle of losing them and getting them back.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why does breaking an unhealthy attachment feel like grief when I know the relationship was hurting me?
What you may need to hear

Knowing a relationship was unhealthy doesn't prevent you from grieving it. You can miss closeness, familiarity, hope, and the relief that came with reconnection while still knowing you don't want the painful cycle back. Grief isn't evidence that leaving was wrong.

Featured lyric
“Maybe I don’t miss you, maybe I miss the relief When you’d come back, and the pain would briefly leave”
From the song story

For when you realize you may not only be grieving the person, but also the relief your body learned to feel every time they came back.

Verse 1 Your absence is a phantom In the corners of my room Every silence sounds like footsteps Every shadow looks like you My brain keeps pulling footage From the nights you held me close Then edits out the damage Like it never hurt the most

Pre-Chorus My logic knows the truth now My body still can't see Why freedom feels like losing Something that was killing me

Chorus This is chemical grief Running circles in my veins My heart still wants the fire Even knowing it's the flame I know the way you loved me Was a storm I couldn't choose But breaking trauma bonds Feels like detoxing from you

Verse 2 I miss you in the mornings Then remember who you were How you'd pull me closer Right before you'd disappear My mind calls it connection My nervous system knows The way you'd leave me starving Just to feed me tiny doses

Pre-Chorus Everyone says healing Is supposed to feel like peace But nobody explains Why it feels like losing me

Chorus This is chemical grief Running circles in my veins My heart still wants the fire Even knowing it's the flame I know the way you loved me Was a storm I couldn't choose But breaking trauma bonds Feels like detoxing from you

Bridge Maybe I don't miss you Maybe I miss the relief When you'd come back And the pain would briefly leave Maybe love shouldn't feel Like something I survive Maybe healing is just Learning not to crave the high

Final Chorus This is chemical grief But the fog is getting thin Every day without you My mind comes back again And someday I'll remember What my body always knew I wasn't addicted to love I was addicted to you

Chemical Ghost

“Chemical Grief” is about the confusing grief that can happen when your mind understands why a relationship needed to end before your body has caught up. There were times when I could know the truth about a relationship. I could remember what hurt. I could understand why going back wouldn't give me the kind of love I actually wanted. And still miss it.

That contradiction made me question myself. If I know it hurt me, why does losing it hurt this much? That's where the line, “Why freedom feels like losing, Something that was killing me.” came from. Eventually I started realizing I wasn't necessarily grieving only the person. I was grieving a pattern my body had become accustomed to. Distance would hurt. I'd feel anxious, rejected, or abandoned. Then closeness would return, and suddenly there was relief. That relief could feel incredibly powerful.

So the line that became the real heart of this song was: “Maybe I don’t miss you, Maybe I miss the relief, When you’d come back and the pain would briefly leave.” That realization helped me understand why healing didn't immediately feel peaceful. Sometimes I missed the warmth without missing the uncertainty. I missed the reunion without wanting the disappearance that always came before it. I missed the feeling of finally getting what I had been waiting for without actually wanting to spend my life waiting for it again. And that's a strange kind of grief.

The title “Chemical Grief” is my way of describing how physical that attachment can feel. It isn't meant to reduce love or grief to one literal chemical explanation. It's describing the experience of knowing something cognitively while your body still seems to be asking for the old pattern. The song also helped me stop using grief as evidence that leaving was a mistake. Missing something doesn't automatically mean I should return to it. Grief can simply mean something mattered to me. Attachment can take time to loosen. My body can miss what is familiar while another part of me chooses what is healthier.

The ending isn't about waking up one morning and never craving the old cycle again. It's about the fog gradually thinning. Every time I experience the urge without automatically following it, I learn something new. Every time I tolerate the absence without recreating the cycle, I give my body another experience of surviving without it. And eventually, maybe freedom stops feeling like loss. Maybe it just starts feeling like freedom.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
