Withdrawal

For when leaving was the right choice, but your body still reaches for the person your mind knows you had to leave.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why do I miss them so badly when I know they were hurting me?
What you may need to hear

Missing someone doesn’t mean leaving was wrong. Your attachment can take longer to loosen than your mind takes to understand why you needed to go. The urge to reach back isn’t proof that the relationship was healthy or that you should return.

Featured lyric
“Maybe I’m not missing you, Maybe I’m missing the high, The way your love would disappear, Then come back and make me fly”
From the song story

For when your mind knows why you left, but your body still aches for the cycle of losing them and getting them back.

Verse 1 It’s quiet in the places
Where your chaos used to live
My phone lights up and I swear
My hands still start to twitch Your name’s not on the screen now
But my body doesn’t care
It learned your rhythm like a drug
Still reaching when you’re not there

Pre-Chorus Everyone says I’m lucky
Everyone says I’m free Then why does freedom
Feel like something leaving me

Chorus This feels like withdrawal
From a love that made me bleed
My mind keeps calling your name
Like you’re something that I need I know you hurt me
I know the truth by heart But trauma bonds don’t break clean
 They tear you apart

Verse 2 My brain keeps playing movies
Where you loved me like you said
 But my chest remembers nights
I cried inside your bed I hate the way my memory
Edits out the pain Like it’s trying to convince me
I’m the one who needs to change

Pre-Chorus Everyone says “don’t text him”
Everyone says “just leave” But addiction doesn’t listen
 When your nervous system screams

Chorus This feels like withdrawal
From a love that made me bleed
My mind keeps calling your name
Like you’re something that I need I know you broke me
I know the truth by heart But trauma bonds don’t break clean
 They tear you apart

Bridge Maybe I’m not missing you
Maybe I’m missing the high The way your love would disappear
Then come back and make me fly Maybe I’m not crazy
Maybe this is chemistry A nervous system craving What’s slowly killing me

Final Chorus This feels like withdrawal
But I know what it’s from A heart that learned to love you
Like a loaded gun And every day without you
My mind starts seeing clear This isn’t love I’m losing It’s the trauma leaving here

Withdrawal

For when leaving was the right choice, but your body still reaches for the person your mind knows you had to leave.

Withdrawal

Withdrawal is about the confusing part of leaving an unhealthy attachment where your mind knows you’re better off, but your body still feels like it lost something it needs.

I wrote this about realizing that missing someone doesn’t always mean the relationship was good or that leaving was a mistake. Sometimes what you miss is the cycle itself. When affection is unpredictable, the moments of closeness can feel incredibly powerful because they come after distance, anxiety, or uncertainty. I started realizing that part of what I was craving wasn’t necessarily him. It was the relief I felt whenever the distance ended and the connection came back. That’s why leaving could feel so awful even when I knew staying was hurting me. My mind remembered the reasons I needed to leave, while another part of me kept reaching for the moments that felt good. Memories softened the pain and replayed the closeness, making me question what I already knew.

The line “Maybe I’m not missing you, maybe I’m missing the high” became the heart of this song. Healing meant learning that craving someone isn’t always evidence that they belong in your life. Sometimes it’s simply evidence of how deeply attached you became to the pattern.

The ending is where the meaning changes for me. Instead of seeing the pain of separation as proof that I should return, I started seeing it as something I could move through. Maybe I wasn’t losing love. Maybe I was finally leaving the cycle.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
