Craving the Hold

For when you miss their touch and the feeling of belonging, but deep down you know you don’t actually want the relationship back.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Do I actually miss them, or do I miss how it felt to be held by someone familiar?
What you may need to hear

Missing physical closeness, familiarity, or the comfort you associated with someone doesn’t automatically mean you want the relationship back. Sometimes your attachment can reach for a feeling even after another part of you knows the relationship itself isn’t what you want anymore.

Featured lyric
“It’s not your heart I’m chasing, It’s the ghost of belonging. It’s not the love we faked, It’s my nervous system calling”
From the song story

For when your body misses the closeness your mind no longer mistakes for a relationship worth returning to.

You called my name like nothing's changed, But the memory of your lies still burns the same. I wanna meet you, I wanna run, I hate the damage, but I miss the fun. Every laugh we had pulls me close, Every secret you kept tells me no. I'm caught between the hurt you made And the part of me that still wants to stay.

Pre-Chorus I know it's not love I'm reaching for, It's the comfort of something | can't ignore.

[Chorus] I'm craving the hold, not the man I knew, It's the ache of attachment pulling me through. I miss the warmth but not the lies, I want the touch but not the goodbye. I know we'll never work as two, I'm just craving the hold - not you.

[Verse 2] We could laugh, waste another night, Pretend the past didn't twist me tight. But your silence still echoes in my bones, I can't forget what you made unknown. So why's my body begging me close? When my soul is screaming, it already knows.

[Pre-Chorus] I'm torn between anger and wanting your face, Between knowing the truth and craving your space.

[Chorus] I'm craving the hold, not the man I knew, It's the ache of attachment pulling me through. I miss the warmth but not the lies, I want the touch but not the goodbye. I know we'll never work as two, I'm just craving the hold - not you.

[Bridge] It's not your heart I'm chasing, It's the ghost of belonging. It's not the love we faked, It's my nervous system calling.

[Final Chorus/Outro] I'm craving the hold, not the man I knew, Just the illusion of safety I once tied to you.

I miss the warmth but not the lies, I want the touch but not the goodbye. I know we'll never work as two... I'm just craving the hold - not you.

Craving the Hold

For when you miss their touch and the feeling of belonging, but deep down you know you don’t actually want the relationship back.

Craving the Hold

“Craving the Hold” is about realizing that missing someone and wanting them back are not always the same thing. There were times when I could know very clearly that a relationship wasn't right for me and still feel an intense pull toward the person. That confused me. If I know we don't work, why do I want to see you? If I remember what hurt, why do I still miss being close to you? If I don't want the relationship back, why does part of me still want your arms around me? Eventually I started separating the person from the feeling.

The line, “It’s not your heart I’m chasing, It’s the ghost of belonging.” became the heart of this song. Sometimes I wasn't craving the relationship. I was craving touch. Familiarity. A body I already knew. The comfort of not being alone. The temporary feeling of belonging somewhere. And because all of those sensations had become associated with one person, my body could translate “I want comfort” into “I want him.” But those aren't necessarily the same message.

That's why the chorus says: “I miss the warmth but not the lies, I want the touch but not the goodbye.” Both can be true. I can miss someone's arms and remember why I left them. I can miss laughing with someone without wanting to rebuild a life with them. I can crave closeness without making that craving evidence that the relationship was right. That distinction gave me a lot more compassion for myself. Instead of treating every urge to reconnect as some profound sign that I was supposed to go back, I could become curious about what I actually needed underneath it. Am I lonely? Do I want affection? Do I miss familiarity? Do I want reassurance? Do I simply want to feel held? Because if what I'm craving is comfort, returning to someone who also brought pain isn't the only place I can find it.

The attachment can speak without getting to make the decision. And maybe that's part of healing too: I can miss the hold without going back to the hands.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
