I Loved You Anyway

For the part of you that loved them deeply, even after you knew love couldn’t make it work.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
For when you stop asking whether the love was real and start asking whether the relationship was actually working.
What you may need to hear

A relationship doesn’t have to become meaningless just because it couldn’t become permanent. You can genuinely love someone and still recognize that the relationship isn’t healthy, compatible, or sustainable for you. Walking away doesn’t erase what you felt. It means love is no longer the only thing you consider when deciding what you deserve.

From the song story

For when you finally understand that loving someone can be completely real without making the relationship right for you.

VERSE 1 I kept waiting on a version of you that only lived inside my chest. You'd come back, say you missed me, then you'd leave before I caught my breath. And every time I let you in, you slipped right through my shaking hands. How do you hold a ghost of someone who was never gonna stay, or stand?

PRE-CHORUS I rehearsed a thousand futures that you never meant to build. You gave me almost nothing, but God, my heart still overfilled.

CHORUS And I know it won't work it never did, but I loved you anyway. You were half a promise, but my nervous system begged you to stay. I kept choosing history every time you turned away... No, it won't work, it never could but I loved you anyway.

VERSE 2 I kept shrinking into silence so you wouldn't feel me needing you. Called it "taking space," but really I was terrified you'd see the truth. I let you sleep beside me, pretending friendship didn't break my bones. You'd leave before the morning light, and I'd lie awake and call that "home."

PRE-CHORUS I begged for crumbs of effort like they were something I deserved. You didn't have to want me but you didn't have to leave me hurt.

CHORUS And I know it won't work it never did, but I loved you anyway. You were half a promise, and I kept praying you might someday change. You'd come close, then disappear, like loving me required pain.. No, it won't work, it never could but I loved you anyway.

BRIDGE And maybe in another life you'd choose me on the first try. You wouldn't make me earn the bare minimum just to feel alive. But this life isn't that one, and I'm tired of waiting for your turn. I'm done mistaking table scraps for the kind of love I've earned.

FINAL CHORUS "Cause I know it won't work and I'm finally learning how to say that losing you was mercy even if it wrecked me on the way. I kept holding onto maybes that were never gonna stay... No, it won't work - it never could but I loved you anyway.

OUTRO I loved you anyway. But loving you was only hurting me. And now I finally see it never could've worked.

I Loved You Anyway

“I Loved You Anyway” is about the strange kind of grief that comes with loving someone while also knowing, somewhere underneath all the hope, that the relationship was never really working. For a long time, I kept falling in love with possibility. Every time he came back, every time he said he missed me, every small moment of closeness gave me another reason to imagine that maybe this time would be different. Maybe this time he would stay. Maybe this time the effort would match the feelings. Maybe eventually the relationship I kept imagining would become the relationship I was actually living. So I wasn't only attached to who he was. I was attached to who I kept believing he could become with me.

That's where the line, “You were half a promise, but my nervous system begged you to stay,” became so important to me. Even when my mind could recognize that something wasn't working, familiarity and attachment could still make losing it feel unbearable. Every return brought relief. Every moment of closeness could temporarily make me forget why I had wanted to leave. And that kept possibility alive much longer than reality probably deserved. Eventually, I had to separate love from compatibility. I could genuinely love someone and still admit that being with them was hurting me. I could miss them and still know I needed distance. I could understand why I kept going back without using that understanding as another reason to stay. And I could stop trying to turn love into evidence that the relationship was supposed to work.

That's what the chorus finally allowed me to say: “No, it won’t work, it never could But I loved you anyway.” For a long time, accepting that we couldn't work felt like I had to invalidate everything I had felt. If I admitted the relationship wasn't right, did that mean I hadn't really loved him? If I chose to leave, did that mean none of the good mattered? If I finally accepted who he was instead of waiting for his potential, did that make all those years meaningless? No. That was one of the hardest things for me to learn: Something doesn't have to become meaningless just because it couldn't become permanent. I loved him. That can be true. The relationship hurt me. That can also be true. I hoped he would change. I can have compassion for the part of me that hoped. And eventually I accepted that waiting for possibility was keeping me from responding to reality.

That's where the final chorus changes the meaning of the song. Losing him wasn't proof that the love wasn't real. It was accepting that loving someone wasn't enough reason to keep choosing something that was hurting me. I don't have to turn him into someone I never loved in order to leave him behind. I don't have to hate the relationship to know I don't want it back. And I don't have to erase the love to accept the ending. It didn't work. I loved him anyway. And now I can let both of those truths be true.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
