I Was Brave

For when you realize courage wasn’t feeling less afraid, it was choosing honesty and vulnerability even while you were scared.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Was I foolish for being so vulnerable with someone who kept protecting themselves from me?
What you may need to hear

Being vulnerable with someone who couldn’t meet you there doesn’t make your vulnerability a mistake. Courage isn’t the absence of fear. You can be afraid of rejection, abandonment, or getting hurt and still choose honesty, communication, and emotional presence. Their response doesn’t determine whether your openness was brave.

Featured lyric
“I’ve been scared of losing love too But I didn’t hide behind it all”
From the song story

For when you realize you weren’t fearless either, you were simply willing to feel the fear without letting it decide how honestly you loved.

Verse 1
I could see it in the silence
 Every time you’d pull away
Like you feared what you were feeling
But you’d never say I know what it’s like to want to run
To shut it down before it’s done
But I stayed when it got real
I didn’t numb what I could feel

Pre-Chorus
I met you in the open
You stayed behind a wall

Chorus
I was brave enough to show you who I am
Even when it meant you might not stay
I said everything I felt out loud
While you kept running the other way
I’ve been scared of losing love too
But I didn’t hide behind it all
I faced it , you avoided
 That’s the difference between us

Verse 2
I did the work you wouldn’t touch
Looked at every part of us
I knew where my patterns came from
Didn’t put them onto you I gave you every honest truth
Tried to show you what to do
Not to change you , just to grow
But you never wanted to

Pre-Chorus
 I was reaching for connection
 You were reaching for control

Chorus
I was brave enough to show you who I am
Even when it meant you might not stay
I said everything I felt out loud
While you kept running the other way
I’ve been scared of losing love too
But I didn’t hide behind it all
I faced it , you avoided
 That’s the difference between us

Bridge
Don’t call it fear if you won’t face it
Don’t call it love if you won’t risk it
I held the mirror, you looked away
And blamed me for what you couldn’t say I was learning, I was trying
I was honest, I was fighting
You had every chance to meet me there
 You just didn’t care

Final Chorus I was brave enough to show you who I am
And I won’t shrink that just to stay
 I won’t silence what I feel
Just to make you less afraid
I’ve been scared of losing love too
But I don’t run when it gets hard
I faced it , you avoided
Now I’m choosing who I are

I Was Brave

For when you realize courage wasn’t feeling less afraid, it was choosing honesty and vulnerability even while you were scared.

I Was Brave

“I Was Brave” isn't about being fearless. It's about choosing courage anyway. One of the biggest misconceptions I had about this relationship was that maybe I was simply less afraid than he was. I wasn't. I had trust issues too. I had reasons to protect myself. I knew what it felt like to want to shut down before I could get hurt. I understood the instinct to run, guard myself, or keep certain parts hidden. The difference wasn't that I felt less fear. The difference was that I tried not to let fear make my decisions for me. I chose honesty when hiding would've felt safer. I chose difficult conversations when avoiding them would've been easier. I chose vulnerability knowing there was always a possibility I could get hurt. I chose to remain emotionally present instead of becoming emotionally unreachable.

That's where the line, “I faced it, you avoided. That's the difference between us,” came from. For me, courage isn't about not being afraid. It's about refusing to let fear decide who I become. I spent years learning where some of my own patterns came from. I looked at uncomfortable parts of myself because I wanted to understand how my wounds affected the way I loved people. Not because I wanted to blame myself for everything. And not because healing meant becoming perfect. I wanted to become more aware of what belonged to me so I didn't keep handing old wounds to people who hadn't created them. I wasn't asking him to become someone else. I was asking for participation. Honesty instead of silence. Communication instead of disappearing. A willingness to look at uncomfortable things instead of automatically retreating from them.

For a long time, I wondered if I had loved too much. Maybe I had been too vulnerable. Maybe I had shown too much of myself. Maybe if I had been more guarded, less emotional, or less willing to talk about difficult things, the relationship would've felt easier. But easier isn't necessarily healthier. And I'm learning that my willingness to be known wasn't the problem.

This song isn't about saying I handled every moment perfectly. I didn't. It's also not about claiming I know exactly what was happening internally for another person. It's about recognizing something about myself: I was scared too, and I still tried to show up. That's what I want to carry forward. Not the belief that vulnerability guarantees someone will stay. It doesn't. Being honest can still lead to rejection. Loving openly can still end in heartbreak. Showing someone who you are doesn't guarantee they'll know how to hold it. But I'd rather learn how to be discerning about who receives my vulnerability than become someone who never offers it again.

That's why the ending isn't about celebrating that I loved harder. It's about celebrating that I stayed true to myself. I don't regret telling the truth. I don't regret wanting emotional intimacy. I don't regret trying to repair things instead of pretending they didn't hurt. And I don't regret being brave enough to let someone see me. Because I'd rather risk being hurt while living honestly than spend my life making fear responsible for every relationship decision I make. I was afraid too. I was vulnerable anyway. And that was brave.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
