Invisible War

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
How do I explain that I’m struggling when I look completely fine from the outside?
What you may need to hear

Looking functional doesn’t mean everything feels manageable inside. You don’t have to look visibly unwell for what you’re carrying to be real or exhausting.

Featured lyric
“I look fine but I’m breaking inside, Living a life where my body and mind collide”
From the song story

For when people see the smile, the house, the plans, and the life you’ve built, but not the battles happening underneath any of it.

Verse 1 Inside my head there’s a hurricane, Lists on lists, never ending chains. 2 AM, cleaning like a storm hit, Hypomania’s hope but my brain won’t quit. Counting to ten just to feel control, Pressure in my eyes, losing hold. Heart pounding loud like a war drum beat, Forgetting appointments, forgetting to eat.

[Pre-Chorus] People see my smile and think I’m okay, But they don’t hear the noise in my brain all day. ‘Why can’t you just do it, use your mind?’ They don’t see the wiring’s been redesigned.

[Chorus] This is my invisible war, You don’t know the battles I’m fighting for. Bipolar swings, PTSD scars, Chronic pain feels like prison bars. I look fine but I’m breaking inside, Living a life where my body and mind collide.

[Verse 2] Depression hits like cement shoes, Can’t move, can’t text, can’t choose. Staring at the wall, lists in my head, Another day wishing I’d stayed in bed. Nighttime comes, my brain wakes up, 4 AM thoughts overflow my cup. Lost interest in the things I love, Crying to God but He stays above.

[Pre-Chorus] OCD loops, every thought on repeat, Every trigger pulls me back to defeat. People see the car, the house, the smile, They don’t see my pain’s been here a while. Say ‘what do you have to be stressed about?’ Come live in my skin then open your mouth.

[Chorus] This is my invisible war, You don’t know the battles I’m fighting for. Bipolar swings, PTSD scars, Chronic pain feels like prison bars. I look fine but I’m breaking inside, Living a life where my body and mind collide.

[Bridge] Pins and needles, leg’s on fire, Jaw clenched tight, my nerves misfire. Every step feels like dragging chains, Smiling on the outside, drowning in pain. Nightmares replay scenes I survived, Every trigger pulls me back in time. I’m not lazy, I’m not weak, I’m surviving a storm no one can see.

[Final Chorus] This is my invisible war, You don’t know the battles I’m fighting for. Haunted by swings, I carry my scars, Chronic pain feels like prison bars. I look fine but I’m breaking inside, Living a life where my body and mind collide. Invisible war, and I’m stitched from the scars.

[Outro — whisper] You don’t know, you don’t know.

Invisible War

For when everyone sees the life you’re living, but no one sees how hard your mind and body are working just to get through it.

Invisible War

“Invisible War” is about what it feels like to be fighting battles inside your mind and body that most people never see. For a long time, I think one of the hardest parts of struggling wasn’t only the symptoms themselves. It was the disconnect between how my life looked from the outside and how difficult it could feel to live inside of it. People could see me smiling, going places, getting things done, or having things in my life that I was grateful for. What they couldn’t see was the noise underneath it. The racing thoughts. The lists that never seem to end. The obsessive loops. The nights when my brain refuses to shut off. The days when depression makes the simplest task feel enormous. The way trauma can pull my body back into something my mind knows is over.

And then there’s the physical side of it. Pain doesn’t disappear because I’m smiling. My body can hurt while I’m having a good day. My nervous system can feel overwhelmed while everything around me looks completely normal. That’s why the line, “I look fine but I’m breaking inside Living a life where my body and mind collide.” became the heart of this song. I wanted to write about how complicated it is to live with things that don’t always announce themselves visibly. Sometimes I can function through them. Sometimes I can hide them incredibly well. Sometimes I’m genuinely happy while also struggling. Those things aren’t contradictions.

One of the most painful assumptions people can make is that someone shouldn’t be struggling because their life looks good from the outside. Gratitude doesn’t cancel pain. Having things to be thankful for doesn’t switch off a nervous system, erase trauma, quiet intrusive thoughts, or make physical pain disappear. And being able to show up doesn’t necessarily mean showing up was easy.

The line “I’m not lazy, I’m not weak / I’m surviving a storm no one can see” matters to me for that reason. There have been times when things that looked simple from the outside required an enormous amount of effort internally. “Invisible War” isn't asking anyone to feel sorry for me. It’s asking people to remember that we rarely know everything another person is carrying. And it's also a reminder to myself that I don't have to prove my pain by falling apart publicly. I can have a beautiful life and still have difficult days. I can be grateful and exhausted. I can laugh while carrying pain. I can look okay and still need support. Some battles leave scars everyone can see. Others happen quietly behind a smile. Both are real.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
