It Makes Sense

For when you stop asking what was wrong with you and start understanding why the ways you learned to survive made sense.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
What if the patterns I judge myself for now once made perfect sense for the life I was trying to survive?
What you may need to hear

Some patterns that cause problems later may have once helped you adapt to circumstances you couldn't control. Understanding where they came from isn't excusing everything that followed. It's a way of replacing shame with context and giving yourself the opportunity to choose differently now.

Featured lyric
“Even the running, even the ache, Was my body saying, “I need a safe place.””
From the song story

For when you finally look at the younger version of yourself with context instead of judgment and realize she wasn't trying to ruin her life. She was trying to find somewhere safe.

I learned to whisper so no one would hear, Curled in a corner, drowning in fear. Walls shaking, glass breaking, Prayers tangled in smoke. Paramedics in the hallway light, Mom crying, saying, "Make him right." But I was just a kid trying to breathe, Holding my pain where no one could see.

[Pre-Chorus] And every "get out, don't come back" Etched a truth that love could crack.

[Chorus] It makes sense, doesn't it? That I ran where I felt wanted a bit. That I mistook control for care, Any voice that said, "You matter, stay there." It makes sense I couldn't stay, When home felt like a hurricane. I wasn't broken - I was surviving.

[Verse 2] Kept every secret, stitched my lips tight, Protected the story to keep peace alive. Watched my brother fade to gray, Watched my mother drift away. Told the world we were all okay, While my faith trembled under the weight.

[Pre-Chorus 2] And when someone said I was enough, I clung to it like oxygen, like love.

[Chorus] It makes sense, doesn't it? That I'd fall for the counterfeit. That l'd trade truth for tenderness, Anything that felt like rest. It makes sense I couldn't stay, When silence screamed my name. I wasn't reckless - I was surviving.

[Bridge] Now I see that every move I made Was a prayer in disguise for grace. Even the running, even the ache, Was my body saying, "I need a safe place." [Final Chorus] It makes sense, doesn't it?

I was trying to find where love exists. Now I can look back and forgive - That girl did what she had to live. It makes sense I lost my way, But somehow, mercy found me anyway. I wasn't broken I was surviving.

[Outro] It makes sense. And I'm finally allowed to say it.

It Makes Sense

“It Makes Sense” is about replacing one of the questions I've asked myself for years. Instead of “What was wrong with me?”

I started asking: “What happened that made this response make sense?” For a long time, I could look back at different choices, relationships, reactions, or ways I tried to find connection and judge myself for them. Why did I stay? Why did I run? Why did being wanted feel so powerful? Why did I protect other people while hurting privately? Why could instability feel strangely familiar? But when I looked at the younger version of myself instead of only judging the adult version, the story started changing.

The line, “Even the running, even the ache, Was my body saying, ‘I need a safe place.’” became the heart of this song. A child doesn't get to choose the environment they're learning love inside. When you're young and things around you feel unpredictable, you learn ways to adapt. You learn when to be quiet. You learn how to read a room. You learn how to protect people you love. You learn how to keep going even when you're scared. And sometimes those survival strategies follow you into places where you don't need them in quite the same way anymore. That doesn't mean every choice I made afterward was inevitable. It means there was context. And context gave me something shame never did: compassion.

The title isn't “It Was Fine.” It's “It Makes Sense.” That's an important distinction for me. I'm not saying painful things were okay. I'm not saying every coping mechanism was healthy. I'm not saying I have to keep repeating anything simply because I understand where it came from. I'm saying I can finally look at the girl who learned those patterns and stop asking why she wasn't somehow stronger, wiser, or more prepared than the circumstances she was living through. She was trying to find safety. She was trying to find connection. She was trying to survive.

And maybe healing isn't punishing her until she becomes someone different. Maybe it's becoming the person who can finally tell her: I understand why you did what you did. It makes sense. And you don't have to survive that way anymore.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
