My Soul Said No

For when your body called something love because it felt familiar, until another part of you finally realized familiar wasn’t the same as safe.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Did I mistake emotional familiarity for love because it was the kind of connection I already knew?
What you may need to hear

We can be drawn toward relationship dynamics that resemble what connection has felt like before, even when those dynamics don't meet our needs. Recognizing familiarity isn't about blaming your past. It's about giving yourself more choices in the present.

Featured lyric
“I didn’t know attunement or care, Just someone in the room, breathing my air”
From the song story

For when you realize the relationship felt like home not because it was giving you what you needed, but because your body already knew how to survive that kind of love.

I stayed too long, thought it meant I was loyal Kept pouring love into something so hollow Told myself, "he's here, it's enough" But I was starving and calling it love You sat beside me but never saw through The ache in my chest, the ghost of my truth I begged with silence, you answered with space Felt like home, in the most painful way

[Pre-Chorus] 'Cause I never knew love that looked like safety Only learned to love what's always shaky Thought the ache was part of the deal If it hurts, it must be real

[Chorus] My nervous system called it love But my soul, she had enough She whispered, "baby, this is not your fault" I was wired for the storm Thought pain meant I belonged But one day, my soul said no-and walked

[Verse 2] My dad was there, but not all the way He never knew the words I needed him to say So when you showed up, but never showed in I thought that's how real love begins I didn't know attunement or care Just someone in the room, breathing my air So I folded myself to fit what you lack Til my heart broke just trying to get you back

[Pre-Chorus] I mistook the silence for connection Clung to your absence like affection And every "almost" that we touched Felt like just enough

[Chorus] My nervous system called it love But my soul, she had enough She whispered, "baby, this is not your fault" I was wired for the storm Thought pain meant I belonged But one day, my soul said no - and walked

[Bridge] It wasn't love, it was a lesson To stop begging for the bare minimum To stop thinking staying means I'm strong To learn l've been worthy all along

[Breakdown] I know he loved me the only way he knew But that version of love almost broke me in two

[Final Chorus] My nervous system called it love But my soul, she rose above She whispered, "we don't chase what doesn't grow" I was wired for the storm But now I crave the calm And that day, my soul said no-and let go

[Outro] Yeah, that day, my soul said no... And I came home.

My Soul Said No

For when your body called something love because it felt familiar, until another part of you finally realized familiar wasn’t the same as safe.

My Soul Said No

“My Soul Said No” is about realizing that sometimes my body recognized a relationship as love because it felt familiar, not because it was actually giving me what I needed. For a long time, I thought staying meant loyalty. If someone was physically there, I could convince myself that was enough. I could tolerate emotional distance, silence, inconsistency, and the feeling of constantly wanting more because part of me had learned that love didn't necessarily mean being emotionally met.

The line, “My nervous system called it love But my soul, she had enough.” became the heart of this song. Because there was a difference between what felt familiar to my nervous system and what another part of me knew I actually needed. Verse two is probably the most important part of the song for me. Growing up, I learned that someone could be present without always being emotionally available in the ways I needed. So later, when someone was physically beside me but difficult to reach emotionally, that dynamic didn't necessarily register as unfamiliar. Part of me already knew how to live there. I knew how to wait. I knew how to understand. I knew how to accept presence as proof of care. I knew how to keep reaching when someone wasn't reaching back. What I didn't know as well was what it felt like to simply receive. To be emotionally met. To feel consistently considered. To express a need without fearing distance. To experience closeness without having to earn it.

That's why “felt like home, in the most painful way” matters so much. Sometimes “home” isn't a compliment. Sometimes home is simply the pattern your body recognizes. And that realization helped me stop judging myself so harshly for staying. Instead of only asking, “Why didn't I leave?” I could ask, “Why did this feel familiar enough that I kept interpreting it as love?”

The ending is where something changes. My soul saying no isn't about suddenly hating the person or deciding none of the love was real. It's the part of me that finally stops negotiating against what I need. I can understand why something felt familiar without continuing to choose it. I can love people from my past without recreating those dynamics in my future. I can appreciate the love I did receive while still acknowledging what I needed and didn't know how to ask for.

And I can teach my nervous system something new. Maybe calm can become familiar. Maybe attunement can become familiar. Maybe consistency can become familiar. Maybe one day I won't have to convince myself that almost is enough. Maybe home can become the place where I am actually met.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
