If I Let You In

For the part of you that wants closeness, but still gets scared when someone gets close enough to matter.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why do I pull away when someone gets close enough to actually love me?
What you may need to hear

Pulling away doesn’t always mean you don’t care. Sometimes closeness brings up fears that distance protects you from: being hurt, hurting someone else, choosing wrong, or losing yourself. You’re allowed to move slowly without automatically closing the door.

Featured lyric
“’Cause loving someone isn’t simple when your past taught you to brace, for the moment someone needs you or the moment you’re replaced.”
From the song story

For when you realize distance has been protecting you from more than heartbreak. It’s also been protecting you from the vulnerability of being truly known.

VERSE 1 I don’t run because I don’t want love, I run because I care too much. Every time it starts to feel too real, my chest gets tight, my hands feel stuck. And I’m scared of what my heart might do if you ever really got inside. Would I stay or would I leave you? Would I hurt you just to hide?

PRE-CHORUS ’Cause loving someone isn’t simple when your past taught you to brace for the moment someone needs you or the moment you’re replaced.

CHORUS If I let you in, I could break your heart or you could break mine first, and I don’t know which one’s worse. If I let you in, I’m afraid I’ll have to choose between the guilt of letting go and the grief of watching you lose. Avoidance looks like distance, but it’s fear dressed up as space I’m not scared of you, I’m scared of the damage love can make if I let you in.

VERSE 2 People think I’m cold or distant, but they don’t know what I’ve survived. I pull back because I’m cautious, not because you’re not my type. I’ve been taught that choosing someone means I’m holding both our hearts, and if yours breaks, I’m the reason so I leave before it starts.

PRE-CHORUS But opening up feels dangerous when you’ve only known defense when every door you’ve walked through felt like walking off a ledge.

BRIDGE I don’t want to be the villain in the story of your life. I don’t want to fall wide open just to lose you overnight. I don’t want to pick the wrong one, I don’t want to get it wrong again so I stand right at the doorway too afraid to step in.

FINAL CHORUS If I let you in, I could ruin everything or I could finally have the love I’ve always been afraid to bring. If I let you in, maybe this time I’ll stay still let the fear sit in my chest, and choose you even if I’m scared still. I’m not pushing you away, I’m just terrified within but maybe love is learning to try again and let you in.

OUTRO So if I pause before I love you, just know it isn’t doubt. It’s the little girl inside me trying not to lose herself by letting you in.

If I Let You In

For the part of you that wants closeness, but still gets scared when someone gets close enough to matter.

If I Let You In

“If I Let You In” is about recognizing that avoidance doesn't always mean someone doesn't want love. Sometimes it means love matters enough to scare you.

I wrote this song from my side of avoidance, because I've realized I can want intimacy and still feel my body resist it when someone actually gets close enough to offer it. For a long time, it was easier to understand my fear of being abandoned. But there's another fear underneath that: what happens if someone actually stays? Then I have something real to lose. I have to let myself be fully known. I have to trust someone with parts of me I've spent years protecting. And I also have to accept that I could hurt another person if I eventually realize I can't stay.

The line, “I could break your heart or you could break mine first, and I don't know which one's worse,” became the heart of this song. Because sometimes avoidance isn't indifference. It's hyper-awareness of everything that could go wrong. What if I choose the wrong person? What if they love me more than I love them? What if I let them depend on me and then disappoint them? What if I finally depend on them and they leave? So distance can start feeling responsible. If I never fully step through the door, nobody can get completely hurt. Except eventually I realized that staying at the doorway is still a choice.

The bridge captures that perfectly: “So I stand right at the doorway, too afraid to step in.” I don't want fear to make my decisions for me. That's what makes the final chorus so important. It doesn't say the fear disappears. It says: “Let the fear sit in my chest, and choose you even if I'm scared still.” That's courage to me. Not becoming fearless. Not pretending my history doesn't affect me. But learning that I can feel fear without automatically obeying it.

This song is about giving myself permission to move slowly without running, to have boundaries without building walls, and to let someone earn access without assuming from the beginning that closeness will eventually destroy one of us. Maybe healing doesn't mean I'll never feel afraid when someone gets close. Maybe it means eventually I can feel the fear... and let them in anyway.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
