My Head Knows Better

For when you can see every reason to leave, but knowing better still doesn’t make your heart let go.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Why can I know a relationship is hurting me and still feel like I can’t let go?
What you may need to hear

Your emotions don’t always update at the same speed as your understanding. You can recognize a pattern clearly and still feel attached to the person, the hope, or the future you imagined. Knowing better is often the beginning of letting go, not proof that you should already be over it.

For when your mind has accepted the truth, but your heart is still trying to negotiate a different ending.

Verse 1
I see the cracks inside the story
. Every promise bending thin
 Every answer slightly different
From the truth you’re standing in

My friends say it’s obvious
They say the signs are loud
But every time you pull me close
The doubt just fades to clouds

Pre-Chorus
My mind is building evidence
But hope keeps breaking through My heart keeps pleading innocence But we need to be finally through

Chorus
 My head knows better
But my heart still runs to you
I see the damage clearly
But my chest ignores the proof Every red flag waving
Every truth I try to face
 Still I keep believing
Love will change the way you stay

My head knows better
God I know it’s nothing new
But logic loses every time
My heart still runs to you

Verse 2
 You give just enough affection
Just enough to keep me near
Like a door that’s always open
But never really here I memorize your silence
Try to read between the lines
Like if I solve the puzzle
Maybe you’ll finally be mine

Pre-Chorus
My body feels the distance
But my hope rewrites the truth

Chorus
 My head knows better
God I know it’s nothing new I see the ending coming
But I still replay the view How can two truths live inside me
Pulling every nerve apart
My head says this is hurting me
But you still have my heart

I see the pattern clear as day
I see the way it bends
But every time I try to leave
My hope rewrites the end

And I swear I know the answer
 But the feeling won’t agree
That’s the quiet kind of torture
Of loving what can’t love me

Bridge
Maybe it’s the loneliness
 Maybe it’s the dream
Maybe it’s the way you feel
Like something in between Maybe it’s the trauma
 Maybe it’s the ache
Maybe it’s the version of you
 I desperately create

And I hate that I can see it
While I’m still inside the flame
Knowing what this is
But loving you the same

Final Chorus
 My head knows better
But my heart still runs to you
 I hear the truth screaming
But my chest calls it untrue Every sign was there
 Every warning in plain view
 Still I kept believing
In a love we never knew

And the hardest thing to swallow
Isn’t losing what we had
It’s how long I fought the truth
Just to keep from feeling sad

Now the truth is getting louder
Like a drum inside my chest
You were never what I needed
Just the ache I couldn’t rest

My head knows better
But my heart still runs to you
And the hardest part of healing
Is finally letting truth cut through

My Head Knows Better

For when you can see every reason to leave, but knowing better still doesn’t make your heart let go.

My Head Knows Better

“My Head Knows Better” is about the exhausting space between knowing the truth intellectually and being emotionally ready to accept it. I wrote this song because there were times when I wasn't confused about what was happening. I could see the pattern. My friends could see it. My body could feel it. I could practically build a case out of every inconsistency, every red flag, every moment of distance, and somehow my heart could still find one more reason to hope.

The line, “My mind is building evidence, but hope keeps breaking through,” became the heart of this song. Because that's what made the experience so frustrating: awareness didn't automatically create detachment. I could know something was hurting me and still love the person doing it. I could recognize breadcrumbing and still feel relief when affection returned. I could know I needed to leave and still feel devastated by the idea of actually doing it.

For a long time, I judged myself for that contradiction. If I know better, why can't I just do better? But healing helped me understand that the thinking part of the brain and the attachment system don't always move at the same speed. My head could understand the evidence while another part of me was still attached to the hope, the history, the intermittent closeness, and especially the version of him I kept believing might eventually become permanent.

That's why “Maybe it's the version of you I desperately create” is such an important line. Sometimes I wasn't holding onto the relationship as it actually existed. I was holding onto its potential. Every small moment of affection became evidence for the future I wanted, while every painful moment became something I could explain away. And eventually hope wasn't protecting me anymore. It was keeping me from accepting reality.

The song isn't saying hope is bad. It's about recognizing when hope has crossed the line into self-abandonment. The final chorus is where the two parts of me finally begin meeting each other: “The hardest part of healing is finally letting truth cut through.” My heart didn't need to be punished for taking longer than my head. It needed time to catch up. And healing wasn't the moment I finally stopped loving him. It was the moment I stopped requiring my feelings to disappear before I allowed myself to believe what I already knew.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
