No more protecting you

For when telling the truth starts feeling less cruel than carrying someone else’s shame in silence.

Emotional question
Why did I feel responsible for protecting their reputation from the truth of what happened to me?
What you may need to hear

Telling the truth about your own experience is not the same as trying to destroy someone. You are allowed to speak about what happened to you without minimizing it to protect someone else’s image. Their choices are theirs to carry. Your story and your voice belong to you.

Featured lyric
“If the truth makes you look bad Maybe the truth isn’t the problem”
From the song story

For when you stop carrying someone else’s reputation more carefully than you’ve been carrying your own pain.

Verse 1 I was taught to keep it quiet Protect your image, guard your name Carry all the damage privately While you walked away unchanged I was told the truth would hurt you That speaking up would be unfair So I carried every wound alone And called it love because I cared Chorus But no more I'm done shrinking for your reputation No more Protecting the story while I'm breaking If the truth makes you look bad Maybe the truth isn't the problem And I'm not speaking now to tear you down I'm speaking so I can finally heal Verse 2 I stayed silent while you rewrote history Made me question what was real Turned my loyalty into a weapon And my forgiveness into a shield But I'm done carrying your secrets Done carrying your shame The weight belongs to the one who caused it Not the one who stayed Final Chorus No more I won't make myself smaller to save you No more I won't bury my voice to protect you I'm telling my story now Not for revenge, not for applause But because healing starts the moment You stop apologizing for your scars.

No more protecting you

“No More Protecting You” is about the moment I stopped believing that protecting someone else’s reputation was more important than telling the truth about what happened to me. For a long time, silence felt like loyalty. I worried about what speaking honestly might do to someone else, how they would be perceived, whether telling my story would make me cruel or unfair, or whether the consequences of the truth would somehow become my responsibility. So I carried things privately that were never mine to carry alone. I thought caring about someone meant protecting them, even when protecting them required me to minimize what I was carrying.

Eventually, I realized something simple: “If the truth makes you look bad Maybe the truth isn’t the problem.” That line became the heart of this song. There is a difference between telling your story to punish someone and telling your story because keeping it buried is hurting you. I don't have to exaggerate what happened. But I don't have to minimize it either. I can tell the truth exactly as I experienced it. For me, “no more protecting you” means no more shrinking the truth to make someone else comfortable. No more carrying shame that doesn't belong to me. No more believing that I'm responsible for managing how another person's choices affect their reputation.

For a long time, I could confuse forgiveness with silence. I could think that being compassionate meant never saying anything that might make someone else uncomfortable. But compassion doesn't require me to erase myself from my own story. And telling the truth about my experience doesn't automatically mean I'm seeking revenge. That's why: “The weight belongs to the one who caused it Not the one who stayed.” matters so much to me. I spent too long carrying responsibility for how the truth might affect everyone except me.

The ending is about finally putting that weight down. I'm telling my story now not because I need applause, revenge, or permission. I'm telling it because my voice belongs to me. I get to decide what parts of my life I speak about. I get to stop apologizing for the scars left by things I didn't choose. And I get to heal without making my healing dependent on whether the truth is comfortable for someone else to hear. Using my voice doesn't make me cruel. It means I'm finally protecting myself too.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
