Raised By Opposites

For when one parent taught you to disappear and the other taught you to carry too much, leaving you to learn where your own needs fit.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
What happens when one parent teaches me not to need anyone and the other teaches me to take care of everyone?
What you may need to hear

Different family relationships can teach very different ways of staying connected. You might learn to become quiet around distance and overly responsible around emotion. Recognizing those roles later can help you separate what you learned to do for connection from what you actually need now.

Featured lyric
“Too much for one, not enough for the other, Half a daughter, half a mother”
From the song story

For when you grew up learning two opposite ways to survive love: disappear when someone pulls away and become the caretaker when someone needs too much.

[Verse 1] Dad stayed quiet behind the door Didn’t yell, didn’t cry, just nothing more I learned to whisper like a ghost Trying not to need him the most

Mom poured all her storms in me Called it love, called it honesty But I was drowning in her fears Playing therapist for all those years

[Pre-Chorus] Too much for one, not enough for the other Half a daughter, half a mother And I kept shrinking just to fit In a house where love was counterfeit

[Chorus] Raised by opposites, one too close, one too far Left me holding every scar Taught to earn, taught to save But never how to feel safe I called chaos “home,” silence “grace” Put on a smile to keep my place And I’m still learning how to be Someone who belongs to me

[Verse 2] Dad would nod but never stay I'd sit with questions he pushed away Mom would cry and say I’m strong Like being her crutch made me belong

[Pre-Chorus] So I became what they both lacked A healer, a ghost, a mirror cracked But when I looked, I couldn’t find The parts of me I left behind

[Chorus] Raised by opposites, one too close, one too far Left me holding every scar Taught to fawn, taught to please But never how to meet my needs I called guilt “love,” I called pain “true” Believed my worth was what I do And I’m still learning how to be Someone who belongs to me

[Bridge ] Dear little me, you did your best You weren’t the cause of all their mess You weren’t too loud, you weren’t too small You never should’ve had to hold it all

[Final Chorus ] Raised by opposites, one too numb, one too loud Taught me to disappear in a crowd But I’m not broken, I just bend And now that story gets to end I won’t call pain “peace,” won’t beg to stay Won’t lose myself to feel okay I’m not their mirror, I’m finally free To be someone who belongs to me

Raised By Opposites

For when one parent taught you to disappear and the other taught you to carry too much, leaving you to learn where your own needs fit.

Raised By Opposites

“Raised by Opposites” is about realizing that I didn't learn one single pattern of love growing up. I learned two opposite ones. With one parent, I learned what emotional distance felt like. I learned to make myself quieter, need less, and not expect certain emotions to be met. With the other, I learned something completely different. I learned to absorb emotion, listen, comfort, understand, and become strong enough to carry things that weren't necessarily mine to carry. So I grew up somewhere between the two.

The line, “Too much for one, not enough for the other, Half a daughter, half a mother” became the heart of this song. Because both dynamics taught me something about what I believed I had to become in order to stay connected. With distance, I could become smaller. With emotional intensity, I could become useful. And neither one necessarily taught me how to simply have needs and trust that someone else could meet me there.

That's why another line matters so much: “So I became what they both lacked A healer, a ghost.” Those two identities sound completely opposite, but somehow I learned both. I could disappear emotionally while simultaneously becoming incredibly attentive to everyone around me. I could struggle to ask for help while being the first person to help somebody else. I could desperately want someone to notice what I needed while making sure I never needed enough to become inconvenient. And eventually I started recognizing pieces of those same patterns in adult relationships. Sometimes I chased emotional distance because I already knew that language. Other times I became the understanding one, the forgiving one, the person who could explain everyone's behavior while barely asking what their behavior was doing to me.

This song isn't about blaming my parents. It's about understanding what I learned from the relationships available to me and recognizing that those lessons don't have to become permanent instructions. That's why the bridge speaks directly to the younger version of me. She wasn't supposed to know how to solve everyone. She wasn't responsible for keeping the emotional temperature of the house steady. She didn't need to become invisible to deserve connection. And she didn't need to become indispensable to deserve love.

The ending is the part I care about most: “I’m still learning how to be, Someone who belongs to me.” Because maybe healing isn't choosing between being the healer and being the ghost. Maybe it's finally discovering the person underneath both roles. Someone who can need. Someone who can receive. Someone who can take up space. Someone who belongs to herself before she has to become anything for anyone else.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
