Silence Was Louder

For when you spent so long making your needs quieter that you almost stopped hearing them yourself.

Emotional question
When did trying to keep the peace turn into silencing myself?
What you may need to hear

You shouldn’t have to make your pain smaller just to make it easier for someone else to hear. Being dismissed, laughed at, or met with distance can teach you to second-guess your own voice. Your needs still matter, even when someone else is uncomfortable hearing them.

Featured lyric
“Silence was louder than words you denied But I won’t live muted, not this time”
From the song story

For when you realize their silence didn’t only leave you unheard, it slowly taught you to stop speaking for yourself too.

Verse 1 I spoke in whispers, careful and kind, But you turned it around, said it’s all in my mind. Every truth I gave, you twisted to doubt, Left me screaming inside while you laughed it out.

Pre-Chorus You hid behind silence, I begged for a sign, But love isn’t love when it feels like a crime.

Chorus You made me invisible, kept me small, I was breaking while you built your wall. Now I’m done carrying weight that’s not mine, I’m finding my voice, I’m drawing the line. Silence was louder than words you denied, But I won’t live muted, not this time.

Verse 2 I reached for your hand, you pulled it away, Afraid of the closeness, afraid you might stay. You said “I’m just joking” when I called you out, But gaslight and laughter both feel the same sound.

Pre-Chorus You hid behind sarcasm, I begged to be seen, But love shouldn’t shatter a girl’s self-esteem.

Chorus You made me invisible, kept me small, I was breaking while you built your wall. Now I’m done carrying weight that’s not mine, I’m finding my voice, I’m drawing the line. Silence was louder than words you denied, But I won’t live muted, not this time.

Bridge I craved your love like oxygen, But all I breathed was smoke. I thought I’d drown without your touch, Turns out I never broke.

Final Chorus You made me invisible, kept me small, But I’m stronger than the weight of your wall. I won’t beg for a love that’s unkind, I’m finding my voice, I’m drawing the line. Silence was louder than words you denied, But I won’t live muted, not this time.

Silence Was Louder

For when you spent so long making your needs quieter that you almost stopped hearing them yourself.

Silence Was Louder

“Silence Was Louder” is about finding my voice after spending too long making myself smaller to keep someone else comfortable. I wrote this song about what happens when you repeatedly try to communicate gently, honestly, and carefully, but somehow leave those conversations questioning yourself. I would explain what hurt. It would get minimized. I would ask for connection. I would get distance. I would bring up something that crossed a line. It became a joke. Eventually, I wasn't only struggling to get him to hear me. I was learning not to hear myself.

The line, “You made me invisible, kept me small.” became the heart of this song because that's what repeated emotional invalidation started to feel like. I began editing myself before I even spoke. I softened my needs. I questioned whether something was worth bringing up. I tried to find the perfect words so there would be no possible reason to misunderstand me. And sometimes I tolerated things that hurt because asking for them to change felt harder than absorbing the pain myself.

That's where the title came from. The silence became louder than the words. And eventually, I realized it wasn't only his silence anymore. It had become mine too. I was swallowing things I wanted to say. Making myself easier. Staying quiet to preserve a version of peace that was costing me my own voice.

The bridge, “I craved your love like oxygen But all I breathed was smoke.” represents another part of the pattern. When you've become deeply attached to small moments of closeness, losing them can feel terrifying. You can start believing that speaking honestly might cost you the connection, so staying quiet feels safer than risking the loss. But eventually I had to ask myself: What kind of connection am I protecting if I have to disappear inside it? That's where “Not this time” changes the song. Not this time will I explain myself until I'm exhausted. Not this time will I accept being laughed at when something genuinely hurts. Not this time will I make my needs smaller so someone else never has to become more emotionally present. And not this time will I confuse silence with peace.

The final chorus isn't about finally finding the perfect words that make him listen. It's about realizing I listen to myself now. I don't need someone else's agreement before I'm allowed to trust what I feel. I don't need to convince another person that something hurt before I'm allowed to draw a boundary around it. I found my voice. I drew the line. And this time, I'm not abandoning myself just to keep somebody else.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
