A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
Can I admit how much it hurt without pretending I never loved them?
What you may need to hear

You don’t have to rewrite love into hate in order to leave it behind. You can acknowledge the good, grieve what mattered, name what hurt, and still know the relationship wasn’t right for you.

Featured lyric
“Pain doesn’t mean I was wrong, I loved you with everything in me, That kind of love makes me strong”
From the song story

For when you’re learning that loving someone deeply and knowing they weren’t right for you can both be true.

Verse 1 How do I say this without shaking? Without my voice giving me away? How do I tell you that I’m breaking But still look strong in your face? I practiced it in the mirror Tried to sound calm, tried to sound kind But every time I get near you My heart forgets the lines

Pre-Chorus How do I name what it cost me Without you turning away? How do I hold all this love When you don’t want it the same?

Chorus I loved and I loved and I loved you Even when loving you hurt I stayed when my body was screaming That something wasn’t secure Now I’m standing here trying To speak without falling apart I loved and I loved and I lost you And it’s tearing me open, it’s dark Yeah, it burns in my chest when I breathe Like I’m carrying more than my heart

Verse 2 You say you never meant to hurt me Like that should make it okay But intent doesn’t stop the damage When I’m the one who paid You held me just close enough To keep me hoping you’d choose But not close enough to promise That you wouldn’t let me lose

Pre-Chorus How do I say I deserved more Without sounding bitter or small? How do I tell you I knew Before you admitted it all?

Chorus I loved and I loved and I loved you Through silence, doubt, and delay I begged for a little more honesty You begged for a little more space Now I’m standing here shaking Trying to swallow my pride I loved and I loved and I lost you And God, it hurts to survive Yeah, it hurts like hell, if I’m honest But I won’t let it take my light

Bridge Maybe love isn’t enough When one heart is halfway gone Maybe I felt it before you did That something was wrong Maybe I knew in my body Before you said it out loud And maybe that’s what destroys me I stayed when I shouldn’t have now

Final Chorus I loved and I loved and I loved you But I won’t beg to be chosen I won’t keep shrinking my feelings So you don’t feel so exposed It hurts and it hurts and it hurts me But pain doesn’t mean I was wrong I loved you with everything in me That kind of love makes me strong

Outro So how do I say this without breaking? Maybe I don’t. Maybe I just let it be true.

Without Falling Apart

For when you know the relationship hurt you, but letting it go doesn’t make the love you felt any less real.

Without Falling Apart

“Without Falling Apart” is about trying to put words around a love that hurt deeply without pretending the love itself wasn't real. I wrote this song about that impossible place where you can understand that a relationship wasn't healthy for you and still grieve it with your whole heart. And acknowledging how much something hurt doesn't require me to rewrite how deeply I cared about the person who hurt me.

For a long time, I thought strength meant being able to talk about what happened without shaking, crying, or falling apart. I wanted to explain everything perfectly, to sound calm enough, reasonable enough, healed enough. But some truths aren't supposed to come out neatly.

The line, “I loved and I loved and I loved you,” became the heart of this song because once didn't feel like enough. I loved through the uncertainty. I loved through the silence. I loved while my body was telling me something wasn't safe. I loved while hoping that eventually being patient, understanding, and honest would be enough for him to choose me in the same way. And eventually I had to understand that loving someone deeply doesn't automatically make the relationship right.

Another important line for me is, “Intent doesn't stop the damage when I'm the one who paid.” I can believe someone didn't wake up intending to hurt me and still acknowledge that their choices hurt me. Both can be true. Understanding someone's intentions doesn't require minimizing their impact.

The final chorus is where the meaning changes. I'm no longer ashamed of how much I loved or treating my grief as evidence that I should go back. “Pain doesn't mean I was wrong. I loved you with everything in me. That kind of love makes me strong.” That's what this song ultimately means to me. I don't regret having a heart capable of loving that deeply. I'm just learning that the next time I give someone that kind of love, I want to give it to someone who doesn't require me to abandon myself to keep them. And maybe I don't need to tell this story without shaking. Maybe shaking doesn't make it less true. Maybe I can let it hurt and still let it be over.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
