You Didn't Break Me

For when healing means taking responsibility for the ways you abandoned yourself without taking the blame for someone else’s choices.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
How do I take responsibility for the ways I lost myself without blaming myself for everything that happened?
What you may need to hear

Taking responsibility for your own patterns is not the same as taking blame for someone else’s behavior. You can recognize where fear of abandonment led you to chase, shrink, or give up boundaries while still holding the other person responsible for how they treated you. Healing means owning what is yours without carrying what isn’t.

For when you stop giving someone else credit for destroying you and start recognizing the relationship as the place where wounds you already carried finally became impossible to ignore.

Verse 1 You didn’t destroy me, I did that myself. You were just the mirror, Reflecting my hell. I blamed you for the spiral, The overthinking storm. But truth was in the silence, That’s where I was torn.

Pre-Chorus You pulled away, I clung on tighter, You needed space, I made myself smaller. You shut down, I screamed out louder, Lost myself just to feel your power.

Chorus But I’m not her anymore The anxious girl begging at your door. You cracked me open, yeah you broke me wide, But from the pieces, I learned to rise. You didn’t destroy me… No, you set me free.

Verse 2 I gave up my boundaries, Just to make you stay. Thought if I loved you harder, You wouldn’t run away. But love can’t be forced, And I can’t fix your fear. Your avoidance wasn’t mine to carry, Now the truth is clear.

Pre-Chorus You feared being engulfed, I feared being left. Two broken souls Running from ourselves.

Chorus But I’m not her anymore The anxious girl begging at your door. You cracked me open, yeah you broke me wide, But from the pieces, I learned to rise. You didn’t destroy me… No, you set me free.

Bridge I’ve done the work, I’ve sat in grief, Felt the ache, found my release. I don’t chase hurt, I don’t stay unmet, I’m whole, I’m worthy, no regrets.

Final Chorus I’m not her anymore The anxious girl begging at your door. You cracked me open, but I’m not broken, From the ruins, something sacred was spoken. You didn’t destroy me… You never owned me. I’m finally free

You Didn't Break Me

For when healing means taking responsibility for the ways you abandoned yourself without taking the blame for someone else’s choices.

You Didn't Break Me

“You Didn’t Break Me” is about the moment I stopped giving someone else credit for both my pain and my healing. For a long time, I thought he had broken me. But healing gave me a more complicated and more honest understanding. He didn't create every wound. The relationship activated wounds that were already there. Fear of abandonment. The urge to chase when someone pulled away. The instinct to make myself smaller when I felt someone creating distance. The belief that if I could just love someone well enough, maybe they wouldn't leave.

This song is about recognizing how two people's attachment patterns can interact in painful ways. One person pulls away from closeness. The other reaches harder for it. One creates distance to feel safer. The other abandons their own boundaries trying to restore connection. And eventually both people can become trapped inside a cycle that keeps confirming what each of them was already afraid of.

That's where the line, “You pulled away, I clung on tighter, You needed space, I made myself smaller.” became so important to me. I wasn't grieving only the relationship. I was grieving the version of myself I became inside it. The girl who apologized for having needs. The girl who gave up boundaries because losing someone felt more frightening than losing pieces of herself. The girl who believed loving harder could somehow fix another person's fear of intimacy. But there's an important distinction in this song: Taking responsibility isn't the same thing as taking blame. I can recognize where my own wounds influenced how I responded without making myself responsible for someone else's choices. I can acknowledge that I chased without deciding I caused someone to withdraw. I can recognize that I abandoned boundaries without deciding I deserved what happened afterward. And I can understand someone else's avoidance without making it mine to heal.

That's why: “Your avoidance wasn’t mine to carry.” became one of the most important truths in the song. The line “You didn't destroy me, you set me free” doesn't excuse what happened either. It means the relationship forced me to look directly at parts of myself I might otherwise have continued avoiding. It showed me where I was still willing to abandon myself for connection. It showed me what I needed to heal. And eventually, it showed me what I never wanted to accept again. The greatest victory wasn't getting him back. It wasn't proving who cared more. It wasn't finally making him understand me. It was finding myself again. I'm not the girl who has to beg someone to stay. I'm not the girl who has to become smaller to make someone else's distance hurt less. And I'm not responsible for convincing someone to become ready for the kind of relationship I want. I can own my healing without owning his wounds. I can take responsibility without carrying blame. And I'm learning that freedom isn't finally becoming someone another person chooses. It's becoming someone who no longer abandons herself when they don't.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
