You Don't Know

For when they’ve left your everyday life but somehow still occupy almost every quiet corner of your mind.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
How can someone be gone from my life and still take up so much space inside my mind?
What you may need to hear

Missing someone doesn’t mean you’re supposed to go back. Your attachment can continue reaching for a person after your mind understands the relationship is over. You can have good days, laugh with friends, keep moving forward, and still experience moments of longing. Healing doesn’t require every part of you to let go at once.

Featured lyric

From the song story

For when the person you’re trying to let go has no idea how often you’re still quietly letting go of them.

Verse 1 I wake up, reach out Still feel you somehow Side of the bed cold But I don’t move now Your name in my phone I don’t press call But I don’t delete it Not at all

Pre-Chorus And it’s stupid, I know But I still check the door Like you might walk in Like you did before

Chorus You don’t know How every second drags your name through my mind You don’t know How I replay you a thousand times You don’t know I see you everywhere I go Even when I’m not alone You don’t know You don’t know

Verse 2 I laugh with my friends But I’m not there I hear what they’re saying But I don’t care Your voice in my head Like it won’t fade Every word you said Still stays

Pre-Chorus And I hate that it does And I hate that it won’t And I tell myself stop But I know I won’t

Chorus You don’t know How every second drags your name through my mind You don’t know How I replay you a thousand times You don’t know I see you everywhere I go Even when I’m not alone You don’t know You don’t know

Bridge It’s in the quiet, it’s in the noise It’s in the space where I hear your voice It’s in the way I still turn around Every time I hear your sound It’s in the mornings I shouldn’t care It’s in the nights you’re not there It’s in my chest, it won’t let go God, I wish that you could know

Final Chorus You don’t know How every second feels like missing you twice You don’t know How I’m still yours in the back of my mind You don’t know I’d still pick you if you showed Even after letting go You don’t know You don’t know

You Don't Know

For when they’ve left your everyday life but somehow still occupy almost every quiet corner of your mind.

You Don't Know

“You Don’t Know” is about the grief someone never gets to witness. It’s about carrying a heartbreak that exists almost entirely inside your own mind while the other person may have no idea how much space they still occupy.

I wrote this song because healing isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks like getting up, going through your day, laughing with friends, answering messages, and doing everything you’re supposed to do while silently replaying the same person over and over again. From the outside, you can look like you're moving on. Inside, you're still letting go.

The line, “You don’t know how every second drags your name through my mind,” became the heart of this song because that's what this kind of heartbreak can feel like. Not dramatic. Not obvious. Just constant. A song reminds you of them. A place carries a memory. You reach toward your phone before remembering there's nothing left to say. You hear something that sounds like their voice and turn around before your mind catches up. The person can be absent from your life while still being strangely present inside it. And I think one of the hardest parts is knowing they may never know. They don't see the mornings when they're your first thought. They don't know how many conversations you have with them only inside your head. They don't see how often you choose not to call. They don't know how much effort can exist inside something as simple as leaving their name untouched in your phone.

For a while, I could interpret that longing as evidence that maybe I still belonged with them. But I've started understanding that missing someone and needing someone back aren't the same thing. That's an important distinction in this song. I can miss someone's laugh. I can miss their presence. I can miss the familiar version of my life that existed when they were in it. And still know the relationship isn't where I belong anymore. My mind and my attachment don't always heal at the same speed. Some days I feel free. Some days I miss someone who no longer belongs in my life. Both things can be true.

That's why the ending isn't about staying stuck or secretly waiting forever. It's about giving a voice to the part of grief most people never see. The quiet longing. The memories that arrive without permission. The tiny moments where your heart reaches backward even while the rest of you keeps walking forward. I don't need him to know every time I missed him for those feelings to have been real. And I don't need to send the message for the feeling behind it to deserve somewhere to go. Maybe that's what this song became for me. The message I didn't send to the person who didn't know.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
