Came Back Wrong

For the part of you that mistook someone coming back for proof they had changed.

What you may need to hear

Someone coming back doesn’t automatically mean they’ve grown. You’re allowed to need more than their return. You’re allowed to need them to return ready.

Featured lyric
“You didn’t come back loving me. You just came back wrong.”
From the song story

For when their return looked like a second chance until you realized nothing underneath it had actually changed.

Verse 1 You pull in past midnight, headlights in my drive, Say you’re worn out from work , I still let you inside. You kiss me like muscle memory, Then leave before the sun hits me. We don’t talk , you say it “stresses you out,” So I stay quiet, pretend I’m fine somehow. You make breakfast like déjà vu, But baby, that’s doesn't prove you're new.

Pre-Chorus You hang with your boys on your days off, Same old laughs, same old walls. Guess I was blind to think you’d change You came back, but it feels the same.

Chorus You came back wrong. I thought you’d fight for me, But you just came to sleep beside what you miss when you’re lonely. You came back tired, Not ready, not strong, You didn’t come back loving me , you just came back wrong.

Verse 2 Said “just friends,” but we both know that’s a lie, Every time you touch me, my boundaries die. I keep hoping you’ll finally say it out loud, But silence can scream so damn proud. You don’t miss me, you miss the part Where I forgave your breaking heart. And I let you, ‘cause I still care , But love can’t live on half-air.

Pre-Chorus We play this game, I know the end. You call it “space,” I call it pretend. You pull me close, then drift away And I hate that I let you stay.

Chorus You came back wrong. I thought you’d mean it, But you just needed somewhere soft to land for a minute. You came back quiet, I came back strong, But you didn’t come back loving me , you just came back wrong.

Bridge We don’t call it love, but my body remembers, Your hands still speak in broken letters. I keep saying “this time I’ll stay strong,” But then you’re here, and I’m already gone.

Bridge Maybe you feel it but can’t find the words, And I’ve been lost just reading yours. If this is what you call love, Then maybe I’ve had enough. If silence is safer for you, Then I’ll stop mistaking it for truth.

Final Chorus You came back wrong. And I can’t fix it, I can’t keep healing a love that’s inconsistent. I thought you’d stay, but you’re already gone You didn’t come back for me You just came back wrong.

Outro Yeah, you came back wrong… And I’m finally done pretending that’s love.

Came Back Wrong

For the part of you that mistook someone coming back for proof they had changed.

Came Back Wrong

"Came Back Wrong" is about realizing that someone can come back into your life without actually coming back to the relationship.

I wrote this song after someone I loved returned, and for a moment, I thought everything was finally going to be different. I thought the time apart had changed something. I believed we'd have the conversations we'd avoided before. I believed we'd finally choose each other completely.

Instead, we slipped right back into the same pattern. We spent time together. We laughed. We shared meals. We held each other. From the outside, it looked like we were finding our way back. But underneath it all, nothing that actually mattered had changed. The conversations still didn't happen. The honesty I was asking for never came. The uncertainty was still there. I realized he hadn't come back ready to build a relationship. He came back because I was familiar. Because I was safe. Because I loved him. But familiarity isn't the same thing as commitment.

One of the hardest parts was that I gave him every opportunity to tell me the truth. I told him if he wasn't all in, we could just be friends. I told him he didn't have to force something he didn't feel. I wasn't trying to keep him, I was trying to make sure we were choosing each other for the right reasons. Instead, he kept telling me what I needed to hear to stay. Looking back, I don't think he came back with bad intentions. I think he missed the comfort, the connection, and the parts of me that made him feel less alone. But missing someone isn't the same as being ready to love them.

That's what this song is really about. Sometimes people come back because they miss what you gave them, not because they've become the person who can finally give you what you needed. For a long time, I confused someone's return with growth. I thought if they came back, it meant they had changed. Sometimes they haven't. Sometimes they just come back wrong. And learning the difference between someone returning and someone returning ready was one of the hardest lessons I've ever had to learn.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
