Dear Drew

For when you stop trying to understand why they couldn’t love you differently and finally decide that what they gave you wasn’t enough.

A gentle map of what this song holds ♡

Emotional question
What if I don’t need to understand him anymore to know I’m done?
What you may need to hear

You don’t need a perfect explanation for someone’s behavior before you’re allowed to decide a relationship wasn’t enough for you. Understanding why someone acted a certain way may bring context, but closure can also come from trusting your own experience and choosing not to return to what kept hurting you.

Featured lyric
“I wasted years trying to understand Someone who never tried to be understood”
From the song story

For when you stop searching for the explanation that will make everything make sense and realize knowing how the relationship felt is finally enough.

[Verse 1] Dear Drew, I see it clearer now You were looking out while I was looking in Always searching for something better While you kept me where you’d been I was love, you were comparison Lining girls up in your head Keeping me as your safety net While you chased what wasn’t there instead You didn’t want me, you wanted options You didn’t choose, you just delayed I was giving you something real You were shopping while I stayed

[Pre-Chorus] And I felt it, but I ignored it Every sign I pushed aside You were halfway out the whole time I was fully by your side

[Chorus] Dear Drew, you never loved me right You just loved that I was there You kept me close enough to hold But never enough to care You didn’t lose me, you just stalled Till something else came through Dear Drew, the truth is simple I was always too real for you

[Verse 2] Dear Drew, I tried to walk away More times than I can say I gave you outs, I gave you space I tried to leave you anyway But every time I got some distance You pulled me back just enough Not because you couldn’t lose me But because you weren’t done You needed it on your timing On your terms, your final say You didn’t want me to move on Till you had someone to replace

[Pre-Chorus] That’s the part that’s hard to swallow You were planning your escape While I was trying to fix something You already chose to break

[Chorus] Dear Drew, you never loved me right You just loved that I was there A placeholder with loyalty While you went anywhere You didn’t fight for what we had You just kept me in your view Dear Drew, I see it clearly I was convenience to you

[Verse 3] Dear Drew, you came back when I moved on Like you finally understood Said you missed me, said you changed Like maybe this time you would And I let you back into my body While you played a different life You don’t come back like that for love You come back when it feels right You were sleeping next to me While you had someone else too And I thought you came to fix it But you came back for what I’d give you Then you disappeared again Like you always do Not confused, not overwhelmed That’s just who you are, Drew

[Bridge] I wasted years trying to understand Someone who never tried to be understood I kept blaming myself for your distance When you were doing exactly what you could And what you could… was never enough

[Final Chorus] Dear Drew, you never loved me right But I loved you more than I should And that’s the only thing I regret Not seeing you for what you were You didn’t break me, you exposed Everything I won’t accept Dear Drew, I’m finally done And you don’t get me again

[Outro] Dear Drew… Don’t come back this time.

Dear Drew

Writing “Dear Drew” was different because I wasn't asking why anymore. I wasn't trying to diagnose him, understand every fear underneath his behavior, or find another explanation that would make the ending hurt less. For so long, understanding had been one of the ways I stayed attached. I wanted to know why he pulled away. Why he could keep me close without fully choosing me. Why he seemed to reach back whenever I created distance. Why someone could say they cared while still leaving me feeling like I was constantly waiting to be chosen. I thought if I understood him well enough, maybe the relationship would finally make sense. But eventually I realized I was spending more time trying to understand him than listening to what the relationship had actually felt like to me.

So this song became the letter where I stopped solving him. I just wrote down what I experienced. I felt like an option when I wanted to be a choice. I felt like I was giving something real while constantly wondering whether he was still looking somewhere else. I felt pulled back when I tried to leave, but never held securely enough to stop wondering where I stood. And when he came back, I wanted that return to mean something different. But eventually I had to stop measuring love by whether someone came back and start measuring it by how they showed up when they were there.

That's where the bridge became the heart of this song: “I wasted years trying to understand Someone who never tried to be understood.” There was always another explanation I could search for. Fear. Avoidance. Timing. Trauma. Confusion. Emotional unavailability. Maybe some of those explanations held pieces of truth. But eventually, the reason stopped changing the impact. Whatever he felt for me, the way I was being loved wasn't enough for me anymore. And that realization was strangely freeing. I didn't have to decide that none of it was real. I didn't have to prove he never cared. I didn't have to turn him into a villain. And I didn't have to finally understand every part of him before I was allowed to close the door. I only had to believe my own experience.

That's why the ending says: “Dear Drew, I’m finally done And you don’t get me again.” It isn't a threat. It isn't an invitation for him to finally explain himself. It's the first time the letter doesn't need a response. “Dear Drew” became the letter I needed to write when I finally stopped waiting for another chapter.

You don’t have to carry it alone.
